The construction of an office building (hereafter referred to as "Building N") was planned in Kagoshima City in western Japan. The building site consisted of loose, alluvial sand called Shirasu, which is subject to liquefaction during earthquakes. It was decided that a newly developed soil improvement technique would be adopted as the foundation construction method. The technique employs the Deep Cement Mixing Method to construct a grid of hardened soil. This grid controls the generation of excess pore water pressure by reducing the occurrence of shear deformation in the native soil within the grid, thereby preventing liquefaction during earthquakes.

"This proceedings, Foundation Upgrading and Repair for Infrastructure Improvement, consists of papers presented at the poster session held in conjunction with the ASCE National Convention, San Diego, California, October 22-26 1995. It contains papers dealing with several state-of-the-art methods for stabilization of structures undergoing remediation. Topics include jet grouting, instrumentation and testing of a pin pile and tieback anchor insert wall system, an overview of micropile technology, and case studies involving installation and load testing helical anchors."--ABSTRACT. "Foundation upgrading and repair techniques that are thought of as experimental today will become more widely accepted as successful projects are tested. In this volume, contributors examine innovative foundation repair techniques that extend service life and/or increase the load carrying capacity of existing foundation systems. Papers review load tests, as well as provide case studies on helical anchors and jet grouting used for foundation renovation and under-pinning, instrumentation and testing of a pin pile and tieback anchor insert wall system used to stabilize a failing slope, and an international overview of micropile technology."--BOOK JACKET.

One-of-a-kind coverage on the fundamentals of foundation analysis and design Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations is a significant new resource to the engineering principles used in the analysis and design of both shallow and deep, load-bearing foundations for a variety of building and structural types. Its unique presentation focuses on new developments in computer-aided analysis and soil-structure interaction, including foundations as deformable bodies. Written by the world's leading foundation engineers, Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations covers everything from soil investigations and loading analysis to major types of foundations and construction methods. It also features: * Coverage on computer-assisted analytical methods, balanced with standard methods such as site visits and the role of engineering geology * Methods for computing the capacity and settlement of both shallow and deep foundations * Field-testing methods and sample case studies, including projects where foundations have failed, supported with analyses of the failure * CD-ROM containing demonstration versions of analytical geotechnical software from Ensoft, Inc. tailored for use by students in the classroom

This book contains select proceedings of the 10th annual conference of Deep Foundations Institute of India, DFI India, 2021. It presents papers on 1) Geotechnical Investigation, Testing, Instrumentation, Monitoring, and Quality Management, 2) Ground Improvement Techniques, 3) Piling and Deep Foundation Techniques, 4) Earth Retention and Deep Excavation Support, 5) Research, Experimental and Numerical Methods in Deep Foundations and Deep Excavation Technologies, and 6) Safe and Efficient Geo-Construction. This book has seventeen articles, each with a specific field application value. The probabilistic approach in evaluating the field data, namely SPT N and pressure meter modulus for arriving at the geotechnical design parameters, multiphase site investigation program for complex underground construction activity, the safety of working platforms in foundation construction projects, usage of liner piles to support the reaction platform for static loading tests for piles, choice of foundation system for three bridges, emphasis on the importance of selecting an appropriate foundation system for the safe and timely completion of the project, challenges in deep excavations, constructions in confined spaces, groundwater level variations, and their influence on tunneling have been discussed. The usefulness of numerical analysis in the design of deep excavations and ground improvement projects is highlighted. The articles covered in this book are of immense value to professionals and academicians for improving their work practice.

The methods and equipment technology employed in foundation and ground engineering have been improved rapidly during the recent years. The application of the modern complex technologies demands specialized knowledge and practical experience. It has become difficult for users and equipment manufacturers to maintain an overview of the state-of-the-art. This compendium provides a comprehensive overview of the processes and the ranges of application, especially going into the choice of equipment. In detail the technological methods and their ranges of application as function of soil, combined with the appropriate equipment are listed with attention on the economically and technically optimized choice. This compendium is the result of intensive collaboration between engineers, technicians, machine manufacturers and users, thus providing a device for planning, design and execution of ground constructions.
