Gus Flesor came to the United States from Greece in 1901. His journey led him to Tuscola, Illinois, where he learned the confectioner's trade and opened a business that still stands on Main Street. Sweet Greeks sets the story of Gus Flesor's life as an immigrant in a small town within the larger history of Greek migration to the Midwest. Ann Flesor Beck's charming personal account recreates the atmosphere of her grandfather's candy kitchen with its odors of chocolate and popcorn and the comings-and-goings of family members. "The Store" represented success while anchoring the business district of Gus's chosen home. It also embodied the Midwest émigré experience of chain migration, immigrant networking, resistance and outright threats by local townspeople, food-related entrepreneurship, and tensions over whether later generations would take over the business. An engaging blend of family memoir and Midwest history, Sweet Greeks tells how Greeks became candy makers to the nation, one shop at a time.

Excerpt from The Decanois, 1922, Vol. 9: Being the Year Book of the Decatur High School During the short time that it has been our privilege to know Mr. Richeson, we have been impressed by the sympathetic justice Of the man. Mr. Richeson came to us in June, 1921, from Ohio University, in which he was the Dean Of the Normal College. A reputation for achievement pre ceded Mr. Richeson here, and his varied activities during the year have certainly justified this to us. It has been a great pleasure to both the faculty and to the students to work with Mr. Richeson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Decanois, 1915 During the summer, 1863, the location of the high school was changed to the basement of the Baptist Church, which was then located on the northeast corner of William and water-streets. Sessions were held there for the following six years. In 1864, the school year was lengthened to nine months, and a short time afterward a three years' course of study was adopted. In August, 1866, three lots on the northwest corner of East North and Broadway streets were bought, to be used as a site for a high school building, but no further action was taken until later. The first class graduated in June, 1867. The class consisted of four members, all girls. In April, 1868, the first work toward the erection of the new school was begun. The structure was completed in the following year. At a cost Of twenty-five thousand dollars. The first sessmn in the new high school building was held in September, 1869. Three teachers were employed there, and Mr. Samuel Jack was principal. A class of eight graduated in 1870. In 1871 the course of study was lengthened to four years, and consequently, there were no graduates that year. In 1892, there being a demand for more room, an addition was made to the front of the high school building. Three years later, in 1895, another addition was made, this time at the rear of the building. The school was then fitted with three session rooms, thirteen recitation rooms, two laboratories, a drawing-room, and a library. During the year 1899-1900, there were seven hundred and thirty-one pupils enrolled. The faculty numbered nineteen.
