Brown and Normore show how Descartes accounted for the complex and diverse objects of human experience within his metaphysical system. They argue that, far from reducing them all to two basic categories of substance, mind and body, he recognized irreducible composites that resist reduction and require their own distinctive modes of explanation.

It sucks to be caught off guard, especially before coffee on what's otherwise a perfect, sunny, Florida Keys day. Luckily, Madison and Fabiana have friends who owe favors on speed dial. Travis West, a shady Miami lawyer with a swanky address, is dead, and the prime suspect is Tarpon Cove's very own Professor Crum (first name none of your business). Crum is a lot of things-including a major pain in the booty-but he's no murderer. Mad and Fab set out to prove he's innocent-as long as they stick to their promise to Creole and Didier to stay out of trouble. Like that's going to happen. Before the sand settles, someone's gun is going to end up in an evidence box-and someone's flip-flopped foot may end up with a toe tag.

When Madison Westin's phone rings before dawn, it usually means something smelly has hit the fan, and today is no exception. Young Kyle Dow wants out of his sketchy job as a snitch. But the thugs holding his leash aren't about to let him go without a little help from Tarpon Cove's resident do-gooder. Only this time, it's not Madison. It's her bestie, Fabiana Merceau. Unfortunately, the kid is as tight-lipped as a Florida Keys clam about his past. Digging too deep risks stirring up the kind of bottom-feeders that give Madison and Fab's men, Creole and Didier, premature gray hair. But when have the girls ever shied away from a little trouble? That'd be never. You can bet your slightly used pontoon boat that when the past comes back, aka big-time trouble that it could not only bite Madison and Fab in the back but the friends who stuck out their necks to help.

DEAD-END ROAD may be more aptly entitled, "Another Brown vs. Board of Education." This book captures the historical, educational and political events surrounding Jasper Brown and his struggles to integrate the public schools in Caswell County, North Carolina. During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Jasper Brown, a God-fearing man, husband, father and community leader, took a bold stand in pursuit of justice, freedom and equality of education for his four children and other black children living in Caswell County. Starting in 1956, jasper, and other freedom lovers, throughout the auspices of the Caswell County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), initiated desegregation of the Caswell County School System. After exhausting all administrative means to integrate the schools, jasper and others filed a lawsuit and embarked upon a bitter court battle. Six years later, the Federal 4th Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia ordered Caswell County officials to integrate the public schools. On January 22, 1963, the first day of school integration, Jasper shot two white men in self-defense and was arrested to stand trial. Ebony and Newsweek magazines ran stories about the shooting. During the trial, the late, Honorable Thurgood E. Marshall assisted with Jasper's defense. Although the civil rights movement initiated by jasper and others was successful, Jasper and his family suffered humiliation, degradation, dehumanization, financial loss and even threats on their lives. Yet, through it all, Jasper and his family held fast to their faith and trust in God that His justice would prevail.

"The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Toronto! stands out as an engaging and highly readable account of the lives of Black people in Toronto in the 1800s. Adrienne Shadd, Afua Cooper and Karolyn Smardz Frost offer many helpful points of entry for readers learning for the first time about Black history in Canada. They also give surprising and detailed information to enrich the understanding of people already passionate about this neglected aspect of our own past." - Lawrence Hill, Writer The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Toronto!, a richly illustrated book, examines the urban connection of the clandestine system of secret routes, safe houses and "conductors." Not only does it trace the story of the Underground Railroad itself and how people courageously made the trip north to Canada and freedom, but it also explores what happened to them after they arrived. And it does so using never-before-published information on the African-Canadian community of Toronto. Based entirely on new research carried out for the experiential theatre show "The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Freedom!" at the Royal Ontario Museum, this volume offers new insights into the rich heritage of the Black people who made Toronto their home before the Civil War. It portrays life in the city during the nineteenth century in considerable detail. This exciting new book will be of interest to readers young and old who want to learn more about this unexplored chapter in Toronto’s history.
