Rock-star music director, spy, and deadly vampire Dragan Zajicek takes the podium of a small orchestra near Chicago as a cover to investigate rumors of a monstrous, impossible-to-defeat vampire known as the Soul Stealer. There Dragan meets gorgeous-but-doesn’t-know-it flutist Raquel “Rocky” Hrbek who is investigating the monster vampire herself. Cruelty made Rocky a shy shadow of herself, except for when performing on her flute. So when shockingly virile, filthy rich, gorgeous Dragan inexplicably pays attention to her, it threatens her protective shell . After a tragedy killed his family, Dragan walled off his heart, threw out rules and went rampaging with the bad boys. Rocky’s sweet nature threatens to shatter his hard-won defiance. Yet as they track down the rumors the two are drawn closer—until the Soul Stealer appears and zeroes in on Rocky. Now she and Dragan must find a way to destroy an indestructible creature before Rocky is utterly consumed and Chicago is bathed in blood. Between the mid-1930s and the late '40s the centre of the jazz world was a two-block stretch of 52nd Street in Manhattan. Dozens of crowded basement clubs played host to legends like Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday. These clubs defied the traditional boundaries between art and entertainment, and between the races.

Edward Power sets the reader down in the midst of a February 2017 blizzard that raked Utah’s Uinta Range as nine snowboarders made their way into the backcountry for a day of intense adventure. As the boarders were taking their first turns, expert avalanche forecaster Craig Gordon was tracking the storm and its impact, posting one of the most dire avalanche forecasts and warnings in his career. In Dragons in the Snow, Power delves into the research and science behind avalanche forecasting and rescue, weaving in the art of backcountry skiing as well as dramatic tales of avalanche accidents, rescues, and recoveries. And he paints compelling portraits of the men and women who have made the study of avalanches their life’s work. The tales told by these avalanche forecasters, as well as the stories of the backcountry riders who may "wake the dragon" make for not just a compelling read, but also a powerful tool for raising avalanche awareness in everyone who plays in the winter backcountry.

Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements were not as well known as those of their male counterparts. Some Liked It Hot looks at all-girl bands and jazz women from the 1920s through the 1950s and how they fit into the nascent mass culture, particularly film and television, to uncover some of the historical motivations for excluding women from the now firmly established jazz canon. This well-illustrated book chronicles who appeared where and when in over 80 performances, captured in both popular Hollywood productions and in relatively unknown films and television shows. As McGee shows, these performances reflected complex racial attitudes emerging in American culture during the first half of the twentieth century. Her analysis illuminates the heavily mediated representational strategies that jazz women adopted, highlighting the role that race played in constituting public performances of various styles of jazz from "swing" to "hot" and "sweet." The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Hazel Scott, the Ingenues, Peggy Lee, and Paul Whiteman are just a few of the performers covered in the book, which also includes a detailed filmography.
