"An unintended event." This was the bland phrase used to describe Luise's sudden death in the psychiatric ward at Amager Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was 32. "Dear Luise" is a mother's deeply personal account of her struggle to ensure her daughter's survival through 20 years of treatment in the Danish mental health system. It is an alarming - and thoroughly documented - expose of the abject failure of the medication-based treatment regimen routinely imposed on vulnerable psychiatric patients. This book is also a poignant tale of love and hope, brimming with tender memories of the creativity, originality and wry humor of a very capable, intelligent young woman. Behind Luise's ultimate fate we see the smug certainty of mental health professionals, both doctors and caregivers, and the concomitant dehumanization of their patients through indifference, harassment, coercion and the use of force. In this tragic case, the mother's investigation also reveals a shocking trail of incompetence and dishonesty - repeated misdiagnosis, professional collusion, "missing" official records, falsified hospital charts, victim-blaming, and a complete lack of accountability. Her mother's ill-fated trust in Denmark's healthcare system led an 11-year-old girl with misunderstood adjustment problems into a doctor-mandated drug hell. First she was wrongly diagnosed and dosed with powerful anti-epilepsy medicine. Then the severe side-effects were treated with antipsychotics that caused even more serious adverse reactions, both mental and physical. Complaints from mother and daughter ran into a stone wall, and all meaningful dialogue was cut short. The system had only one response - increase the medication. Luise's tragedy is far from unique in Denmark - or indeed any other "advanced" industrialized country. Towards the end of her life she knew what was happening to her. Luise told her mother: "On my gravestone I want it to say that it was the medicine that killed me."

Our Little Danish Cousin by Luna May Ennis is a tale about lovely little Karen and her life in Denmark. Excerpt: "Denmark means "Land of dark woods." Although one of the smallest states of Europe, the little kingdom of Denmark holds a very large place in the world's history, having supplied rulers for many of the countries of Europe. The Dane loves his beautiful country, the land of Thorvaldsen and Hans Christian Andersen, of blue lakes, and "fairy-tale" castles. Since the days of Leif and Biarne, Denmark and the United States have been allied, and therefore I feel sure that the children of America will be interested in the story of their little Danish Cousin."

'Oh my gosh...! Laugh-out-loud hilarious and give-me-a-box-of-tissues-heartbreaking. I loved it so much!... Beautiful.' Tales of a Bookbound Mum, 5 stars The must-read book of 2019! Equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, fans of Jojo Moyes, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and One Day in December will love this special novel by Drew Davies. Dear Lily, It's me, Joy, your much wiser and (very slightly) older sister. I thought I'd start a new tradition of letter writing - now that we're long distance. On the plane over here, I began to cry in seat 21C. I think the magnitude of it finally hit me, after everything that happened... I haven't even unpacked yet - the only thing I've taken out of my suitcase is Harville, your beloved childhood teddy. Sorry for stealing him, but I need him more than you do. Every time I look at that little brown bear I think about our childhood. Remember that dance we made up to Annie's 'It's a Hard Knock Life'? (Remember the broom choreography?) I'm also sorry for abandoning you - I've always been your agony aunt, and a buffer in your infamous shouting matches with Mum. But I had to leave, Lily, I had to. Anyway, I'm here now. I'm here to start over, and to face up to the past. I want to learn to laugh again, and to find someone to love who will maybe even love me back. You always told me I was just getting by, not actually living, so I'm finally doing it. Wish me luck, little sister. Love, Joy x A beautiful book-club read for anyone who has ever hit rock bottom, longed for a fresh start, or needed to heal a broken, aching heart.
