Excerpt from David Livingstone Since the days of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, it would be hard to find a more striking examfle of faith fulness to the family motto than David's life furnishes. A more perfect example of a downright simply honest life, whether in contact with queens or slave-boys, one may safely say, is not on record on our planet. Happily, in this instance, it is not difficult to supplement the meagre outline sketched by the man himself, from his own letters. Excerpt from Life and Explorations of David Livingstone The cent success of the unique expedition of the new-york Herald newspaper in search of Dr. Livingstone, the most dis tinguished of African missionaries, and modern travellers, has given renewed interest to a continent which has been well described as the division of the world which is the most interesting, and about which we know the least. To supply the popular demand fotin formation in regard to Africa, the explorations of Dr. Livingstone, the Herald expedition, and subjects most intimately connected therewith, the following volume has been prepared. It will be seen that Dr. Livingstone himself, and Mr. Stanley, the conductor of the Herald expedition, have been largely quoted in the compila tion of the work. No one has written of Africa more intelligently, graphically, or fully, than Dr. Livingstone, and none so recently as Mr. Stanley. They are, of course, the principal authorities for this volume, as they are the best that can be had, but the te searches of others have been used whenever necessary to add in terest to the subject, and to make this book as nearly a complete account of all that is now known of Africa as possible. As such, it is now given to the public in the confident belief that it will supply a want generally felt, and which has often been expressed by the journals of our own and other countries, and other recog nized representatives of public Opinion. No book of travels is more interesting than the great work of Dr. Livingstone, and none, we think, which contains so much information valuable to the reading world. There we have a nar rative in which are finely blended accounts of missionary labors, scientific researches, explorations among strange people, wonderful animals, a country to which attaches the deepest interest; and all told in the most attractive manner. In Mr. Stanley's dispatches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from David Livingstone: The Great Heart of Africa For all that makes us most proud of our race. His work as an explorer filled the imagination of his own gener ation with a sense of the heroic. Those of later birth appreciate the inestimable service which he did to the nation and to the common humanity by his enterprise and the character he bore while prosecuting it. All who know the manner of his death are brought into the temple where only the true and the good can enter. In the holy hush that subdues the mind at the thought of his pious departure, there is a mystic awe, which surrounds the plain lettered stone covering his body with a cloud of sacrificial incense. Excerpt from David Livingstone: Explorer and Prophet As to dull-appearing books, the neglect of an interesting character, and the glory of discovering him, let me tell briefly the tale of my own discovery, and if the telling of it and the writing of this book will send readers to Livingstone's Journals, I shall count myself fortunate. Excerpt from The Story of David Livingstone In thirty years he travelled miles, through the wild and unknown parts of Africa, exploring rivers, lakes, plains, forests, and mountains. He found out places where white settlers might make farms and plantations in health and safety. He sought for paths and waterways by which they might bring their cotton, grain, coffee, sugar, ivory, and skins to the sea ports for sale. Among the black tribes he made many friends, doctored their sick, and lost no chance of showing them how to do their duty to God and make better use of their lives. Excerpt from The Last Journals of David Livingstone, in Central Africa: From Eighteen Hundred and Sixty-Five to His Death IN the midst of the universal sorrow caused by the intelligence that Dr. Livingstone had lost his life at the farthest point to which he had penetra ted in his search for the true sources of the Nile, a faint hope was indulged that some of his journals might survive the disaster: this hope, I rejoice to say, has been realized beyond the most sanguine expectations.
