The Department of Energy (DOE) invests over $11 billion annually in R&D. Although a large part of these funds are expended directly by DOE's National Laboratory system, significant funding is provided through financial assistance awards to academic institutions, small businesses, and others, and through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA) initiated by DOE field and contractor-operated sites. DOE has a mandate to publicly disseminate unclassified research. The results of research funded by DOE are submitted to Energy (E-Link), which contains the results from R&D, demonstration and commercial activities.
