"Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are physical systems that are controlled or monitored by computer-based systems. CPSs are a combination of computation, networking, and physical processes. As CPSs are a combination of various diverse components, they are vulnerable to several security threats. Moreover, there are many different security domains (not just high/low, nor necessarily hierarchical). This paper utilizes previously developed multiple security domain nondeducibility (MSDND) to uncover potential integrity vulnerabilities in an electric microgrid. Invariants are manually generated using the insights obtained through MSDND analysis and use linear regression to automate the generation of invariants. The vulnerabilities are then mitigated, to the extent possible, by adding executable invariants on system operation. Implementation on the Electric Power and Intelligent Control (EPIC) testbed at the Singapore University of Technology and Design is reported. Limitations of the design and successes/shortcomings of attack mitigation are reported"--Abstract, page iii.

Next-Generation Cyber-Physical Microgrid Systems: A Practical Guide to Communication Technologies and Resilience presents the opportunities and challenges of using communication network technology to integrate distributed generation systems into microgrids. Working their way through case studies and theoretical strategies, the global range of authors analyze the particular needs of different system structures, including DC, AC-DC and hybrid microgrids, island-bound or grid-connected systems, and case studies in wind power and photovoltaic systems. Risks arising from the communication networks are addressed in detail, with strategies covered including modelling, cyber-physical security set-ups, applications of blockchain, demand-response analyses, and the impact and mitigation of cyber-attacks. Power-electronics interfaces for the integration of these technologies are demonstrated and explained. With a wealth of real-world, practical advice for the implementation and protection of these communication strategies, Next-Generation Cyber-Physical Microgrid Systems will be a useful resource for researchers and industry professionals developing the sustainable energy systems of the future. Provides a practical reference for resilience in the cyber-physical microgrid with distributed and renewable integration Summarizes the opportunities and challenges arising from the implementation of communication technologies Includes simulations, models, case studies, and test codes to maximize practical application for students and professionals

This book focuses on the combined cyber and physical security issues in advanced electric smart grids. Existing standards are compared with classical results and the security and privacy principles of current practice are illustrated. The book paints a way for future development of advanced smart grids that operated in a peer-to-peer fashion, thus requiring a different security model. Future defenses are proposed that include information flow analysis and attestation systems that rely on fundamental physical properties of the smart grid system.

IEEE 2030.5, also known as the Common Smart Inverter Standard (CSIP) is a protocol that specifies the interface between the end user and the smart grid. This standard was proposed recently, and provides many functions which if implemented incorrectly might lead to vulnerabilities. This paper proposes a cyber-physical microgrid testbed using OpenDSS and IEEE 2030.5 that can be used to study the performance of the CSIP protocol various scenarios. For critical microgrid installations, it is essential that the critical loads are served in spite of multiple contingencies. A resiliency analysis is performed for a military microgrid to study its performance and the results are analyzed.

This book is centered on Smart grids and micro-grids, as a cost-effective method of ensuring fair and equitable access to power in urban areas. It also considers scenarios where deploying smart grids can be both cost-prohibitively expensive and logistically challenging. Deploying smart microgrids instead, offers a reliable power solution but, as is the case in smart grids, a key issue is guaranteeing usability, trust, and reliability while protecting against energy theft. This book considers aspects such as state estimation, capacity planning, demand forecasting, price signals, and demand management with respect to energy theft. Straight-forward approaches to provoking energy theft on smart grids and micro-grids include mis-recordings power consumption/generation information and exposures of personally identifiable information or sensitive information. Attack models based on mis-recorded generation and/or consumption data and exposure of personally identifiable information, are also studied. In each case, countermeasures are proposed to circumvent the power theft attacks raised. Researchers in Smart Micro-grids security, cyber-physical systems, and critical infrastructure will want to purchase this book as a reference. Professionals, Researchers, Academics and students working in security general and Security of Critical Infrastructure, Privacy, and Data Sharing will also want to purchase this book as a reference.
