The rapid expansion of organic food markets and the recent acceptance of national organic standards has led to the opportunity for the Canadian Wheat Board to revisit its policy on organic grains and identify areas for innovation. This discussion paper summarizes current issues in organic grain marketing and suggests several options for change and innovation. After background on the current state of the organic grain industry, issues discussed include the need for certification as organic, timing of national standards, producer direct sales, premiums for organic grain, and whether there should be an exemption for organic wheat and barley.
