Some periods in history are marked by stability in cultural values; at other times, values undergo rapid change. How and why do cultural transformations, such as those affecting race and gender relations, take place? How does one value win acceptance in society when there are conflicting values competing for attention? In Culture Moves, Thomas Rochon addresses this complex process and develops a theory to explain both how values originate and how they spread. In particular, he analyzes the crucial role that small communities of critical thinkers play in developing new ideas and inspiring their dissemination through larger social movements. There is an emerging view, supported by animal welfare legislation in a number of countries, that some advanced invertebrates are self-aware, sentient beings with the ability to feel pain. Sentience must encompass elements of time and neural complexity, including memory and learning, which leads us to ask: At what convergent point in the evolution of nervous systems does the subjective sensation of pain arise? Here we start to grapple with this issue, particularly with regard to arthropods and cephalopod molluscs, and to consider the most appropriate ways of anesthetizing them to minimize pain wherever possible. We also report on the development of cell culture techniques to understand the actions of the anesthetics being used. A better understanding of sentient creatures, other than ourselves, may eventually assist future development of artificial intelligence, particularly if we are able to perceive whatever common neural features underlie sentience in those animals that possess it.

Presenting original, detailed studies of keywords of Danish, this book breaks new ground for the study of language and cultural values. Based on evidence from the semantic categories of everyday language, such as the Danish concept of hygge (roughly meaning, ‘pleasant togetherness’), the book provides an integrative socio-cognitive framework for studying and understanding language-particular universes. It is argued that the worlds we live in are not linguistically and conceptually neutral, but rather that speakers who live by Danish concepts are likely to pay attention to their world in ways suggested by central Danish keywords and lexical grids. By means of a sophisticated semantic methodology, the author accounts for the meanings of even highly culture-specific and untranslatable linguistic concepts. The book offers new tools for comparative research into the diversity of semantic and cultural systems in contemporary Europe.
