Examining interactions between native Americans and whites in eighteenth-century Pennsylvania, Jane Merritt traces the emergence of race as the defining difference between these neighbors on the frontier. Before 1755, Indian and white communities in Pennsylvania shared a certain amount of interdependence. They traded skills and resources and found a common enemy in the colonial authorities, including the powerful Six Nations, who attempted to control them and the land they inhabited. Using innovative research in German Moravian records, among other sources, Merritt explores the cultural practices, social needs, gender dynamics, economic exigencies, and political forces that brought native Americans and Euramericans together in the first half of the eighteenth century. But as Merritt demonstrates, the tolerance and even cooperation that once marked relations between Indians and whites collapsed during the Seven Years' War. By the 1760s, as the white population increased, a stronger, nationalist identity emerged among both white and Indian populations, each calling for new territorial and political boundaries to separate their communities. Differences between Indians and whites--whether political, economic, social, religious, or ethnic--became increasingly characterized in racial terms, and the resulting animosity left an enduring legacy in Pennsylvania's colonial history.

Upheavals and reversals in culture, popular opinion, morality, race relations, socioeconomic status, and so much more have entire generations feeling off balance or out of touch. How do we keep pace with the breathtaking rate of change in our society when we can hardly find time to keep up with our racing newsfeeds? And in the face of such enormous cultural forces, is there anything we can do to help shape our culture? With America at the Crossroads, bestselling author and cultural analyst George Barna turns his researcher's eye on the most significant trends of our moment in history, compiling and distilling the most salient information for busy readers who want to shape culture rather than allow it to shape them. We have made tremendous strides as a nation. No other country has advanced as far and as fast as the United States of America. We can be justifiably proud of our great achievements in so many areas. Unfortunately, we have also become a nation immersed in political complacency and spiritual apathy. Our values are going through a shredder and are emerging as a mixed bag of ambiguous religiosity and intensifying immorality. America is indeed at a crossroads. We must choose either to continue our downward spiral of God-mocking and liberal lunacy, or turn to Almighty God and our Christian roots. This book addresses that choice head-on. Without any mincing of words, the hard-hitting, abbreviated chapters of this brief writing identify what may well be the most damaging problem in America, and point us toward a major step in its overall solution.

"Should Christians be concerned with faith and evangelism and not politcal affairs?" In answering this question, American Crossroads provides a thought-provoking look at what it means to submit to the governing authorities of the United States of America. Just as God called for Christians to submit to the Roman government that forced its will upon the people (Rom 13:1), so too is God calling for us to submit to the existing form of government in the United States, a government that lives and thrives upon the will and involvement of people. Today, by submitting to the government, Christian citizens are led to influence the American political process that depends upon the involvement of all citizens for its well-being and survival.
