Ranft has provided parameterizations of Lorentz invariant differential cross sections for pion and nucleon production in pion-proton collisions that are compared to some recent data. The Ranft parameterizations are then numerically integrated to form spectral and total cross sections. These numerical integrations are further parameterized to provide formula for spectral and total cross sections suitable for use in radiation transport codes. The reactions analyzed are for charged pions in the initial state and both charged and neutral pions in the final state.Norbury, John W. and Blattnig, Steve R. and Norman, Ryan and Tripathi, R. An accurate knowledge of cross sections for pion production in proton-proton collisions finds wide application in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and space radiation problems, especially in situations where an incident proton is transported through some medium and knowledge of the output particle spectrum is required when given the input spectrum. In these cases, accurate parameterizations of the cross sections are desired. In this paper much of the experimental data are reviewed and compared with a wide variety of different cross section parameterizations. Therefore, parameterizations of neutral and charged pion cross sections are provided that give a very accurate description of the experimental data. Lorentz invariant differential cross sections, spectral distributions, and total cross section parameterizations are presented.Blattnig, Steve R. and Swaminathan, Sudha R. and Kruger, Adam T. and Ngom, Moussa and Norbury, John W. and Tripathi, R. The effects of pion (PI) production are expected to play an important role in radiation exposures in the upper atmosphere or on the Martian surface. Nuclear databases for describing pion production are developed for radiation transport codes to support these studies. We analyze the secondary energy spectrum of pions produced in nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions in the relativistic one-pion exchange model. Parametric formulas of the isospin cross sections for one-pion production channels are discussed and are used to renormalize the model spectrum. Energy spectra for the deuteron related channels (NN yields dPi) are also described. Cucinotta, Franics A. and Wilson, John W. and Norbury, John W. Langley Research Center...

The two reactions np .-->. nn.pi. and np .-->. pp.pi.− were studied at 790 MeV (incident neutron energy). Pion spectra were measured at 10 different angles with a multiwire proportional chamber spectrometer. Approximately 100,000 events were analyzed. The angular distribution of pions in the np center of momentum system (d sigma/d.cap omega.*) was given by ((123.1 +- 2.7) + (88.3 +- 4.9)cos2(theta*))(.mu.b/sr). The cross section sigma(np .-->. NN.pi./sup +-/) was determined to be 1.92 +- 20 mb by integrating (d sigma/d.cap omega.*) over all angles. The partial cross section for pion production from T = 0 np interactions (sigma01) was found to be .1/sub -.1//sup +.5/ mb by using the relation sigma01 = 2sigma(np .-->. NN.pi./sup +- )--sigma(pp .-->. pp.pi.°). Stronger indications of nonresonant pion production were given by the presence of asymmetries between the positive and negative pion spectra and a comparison of the data with an isobar model calculation.
