Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Handbook to the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Vol. 1 The extravagance of criticism, which in various productions Of the day far transcends the boldness Of Baur, does not advance the matter, bursts all the tics even of historical possibility, turns things upside down, promotes the convenient aversionr - already, alas so widely diffused - to criticism generally, as if it were an affair of unbelief, and works involuntarily into the hands of the Jews, who gladly accept the alleged negative results as if they were settled matters, as may be sufficiently seen from several writings Of modern Jewish scholars. Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Handbook to the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Vol. 2 Vv. 1, 2. As, on the one hand, Matt. Iii. 1 introduces the appearance of the Baptist without any definite note of time, only with c'v 8é m2? Fiaépais e'xet'vate; so, on the other, Luke the first writer who frames the Gospel history into the great history of the world byg Giving precise dates, Ewald), in fulfil ment of his intention, i. 3, gives for that highly important starting-point of the proclamation of the Gospel hie quasi scena N. T. Panditur, Bengel) a date specified by a sixfold reference to the history of the period, so as to indicate the emperor at Rome and the governors of Palestine, as well as the high priest of the time, namely in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar. Augustus, who was succeeded by his step-son Tiberius, died on the 19th August 767, or the fourteenthyear of the era of Dionysius. See Suetonius, Octav. 100. Accordingly, it might appear doubtful whether Luke reckons the year 767 or the year 768 as the first; similarly, as Tiberius became co-regent at the end of 764, or in January 765 (tacit. Arm. I. 3 Sueton. Tib. 20 f. Velleius Paterculus, ii. Whether Luke begins to reckon from the commencment of the co-regency (ussher, Voss, Fagins, Clericus, Sepp, Lichtenstein, Tischendorf, and others), or of the sole government. Since, however, no indication is added which would lead us away from the mode of reckoning the years of the emperors usual among the Romans, and followed even by J osephus,1 we must abide by the view that the fifteenth year in the passage before us is the year from the 19th August 781 to the same date 782. Excerpt from A Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Vol. 1 A Year and half has passed away - and how swiftly! - since the publication of this Commentary, and already a second edition has become necessary. I bless the Lord for the acceptance which this work has met with in the churches of Switzerland and of France, and I hail it as a symptom of that revived interest in exegetical studies, which has always appeared to me one of their most urgent needs. I tender my special thanks to the authors of those favourable reviews which have given effectual aid towards the attainment of this result. Almost every page of this second edition bears the traces of corrections in the form of my former work; but the substance of its exegesis and criticism remains the same. Of only one passage, or rather of only one term (second-first, vi. 1), has the interpretation been modified. Besides that, I have made a number of additions occasioned by the publication of two works, one of which I have very frequently quoted, and the other as often controverted. I refer to M. Gess' book, Sur la Personne et l' uvre de Christ (first part), and to La Vie de Jesus by M. Keim (the last two volumes). In a recent article of the Protestantische Kirchenzeitung, M. Holtzmann has challenged my critical standpoint as being determined by a dogmatic prepossession. But has he forgotten the advantage which Strauss took in his first Vie de Jesus of the hypothesis of Gieseler, which I have defended? Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S. Luke This volume has no such ambitious aim as that of being a final commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. The day is probably still far distant when any such commentary can be written. One of the difficulties with which the present commentator has had to contend is the impossibility of keeping abreast of all that is constantly appearing respecting the Synoptic Gospels as a whole and this or that detail in them. And the Third Gospel abounds in details which have elicited special treatment at the hands of a variety of scholars. Every quarter, indeed almost every month, brings its list of new books, some of which the writer wishes that he could have seen before his own words were printed. But to wait is but to prolong, if not to increase, one's difficulties: it is waiting dum defluat amnis. Notes written and rewritten three or four times must be fixed in some form at last, if they are ever to be published. And these notes are now offered to those who care to use them, not as the last word on any one subject, but simply as one more stage in the long process of eliciting from the inexhaustible storehouse of the Gospel narrative some of those things which it is intended to convey to us. They will have done their work if they help someone who is far better equipped entirely to supersede them. The writer of this volume is well aware of some of its shortcomings. There are omissions which have been knowingly tolerated for one or other of two adequate reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
