Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) was introduced in the United States almost 100 years ago when the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads (now the Federal Highway Administration) constructed a CRCP test section on Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia. Since then, CRCP has been constructed in many states in the U.S. and in a number of other countries. As experience with the design and construction of CRCP has grown, a variety of lessons learned through practical experience and research have contributed to the development of best practices for CRCP throughout its life cycle. Today, CRCP is designed and constructed as a pavement of choice for long-life performance, recognizing that initial smoothness will be maintained for decades and that maintenance during that time will be minimal. This manual provides guidance for materials selection and quality assurance, and for the mechanistic-empirical design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of CRCP. Case studies are summarized to document the overall long-life performance of CRCP in the U.S. and in other countries.

The performance of CRCP has revealed a number of failure modes that are traceable to design, construction, materials, and maintenance deficiencies and such other factors as environemntal conditions and traffic loadings. This report of the Transportation Research Board includes a review of the cumulative experiences of state that have constructed and maintained CRCP. Guidelines for repair techniques are included, and areas of needed research are identified.

Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is enjoying a renaissance across the United States and around the world. CRCP has the potential to provide a long-term, "zero-maintenance," service life under heavy traffic loadings and challenging environmental conditions, provided proper design and quality construction practices are utilised. This book provides an overview of the CRCP technology and the major developments that have led to what are referred to herein as the "best practices" for CRCP design and construction. The purpose of this book is to provide the best practices information on rehabilitation strategies for extending the service life of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP). The procedures described in this book consist of defining the problem, identifying potential solutions, and selecting the preferred alternatives.

"This document serves as the primary reference manual for the FHWA/NHI training course Concrete Pavement Design Details and Construction Practices". The course provides participants with current guidelines on the design and construction of concrete pavements. Key topics covered include concrete pavement type selection, subgrade preparation and characterization, drainage design, base and subbase consideration, thickness design, joint design, shoulder considerations, construction considerations, special design considerations for reinforced concrete pavements, and maintenance considerations. Emphasis is given to jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP), although special design considerations for jointed reinforced concrete pavements (JRCP) and continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) are discussed"--Technical report documentation p.
