A method for evaluating break up, or shattering anc cracking may be by the use of the crack arrest fracture toughness, Ka. Use of this Ka would not be restricted to steels, but could be applied to other armor materials also. The crack arrest fracture toughness, KIa, of the two steels were shown to be different, the 4130 being tougher than 4340. The significance of this can only be ascertained by comparing these results with ballistic test data. Keywords: High strength steels; Armor plate; Transition temperatures; Fracture toughness; Mechanical properties; Dynamic properties; Crack propagations; Ballistic testing.

Conventional ballistic evaluation of armor plate is based on a critical impact velocity for penetration. At high hardness levels and/or low temperatures, ballistic impact can give rist to extensive plate cracking, resulting in structural degradation whether or not penetration occurs. This report provides preliminary results on a test procedure to assess the plate cracking sensitivity of high strength, steel armor plate. The procedure involves the production of a large flaw, or crack starter, at the center of a plate and then impacting the center of the opposite face with a soft, blunt-nosed projectile. The impact tests are performed over a range of temperatures to yield a plate shatter transition temperature (PSTT). The PSTT is simply the highest plast temperature at which extensive plate cracking occurs. The influence of PSTT test parameters and correlation with crack arrest fracture toughness over the same temperature range are currently being studied. (sdw).

NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
