As the United States expanded west in the 1800s, and cattle became big business, the figure of the young brash cattleman who rode with the herds quickly emerged as a cultural icon. Victorian Americans went crazy for cowboys, snapping up dime-store novels and sheet music, and turning out in droves for Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. It was only a matter of time before someone brought together these three facets-entertainer, singer, and cowboy. And when Carl T. Sprague recorded the first hit cowboy record ("When the Work's All Done This Fall") in 1925, the singing cowboy as we know him was born. A singing cowboy himself, Douglas B. Green (better known as Ranger Doug from the Grammy-award-winning group Riders In The Sky) is uniquely suited to write the story of the singing cowboy. He has been collecting information and interviews on western music, films, and performers for nearly thirty years. In this volume, he traces this history from the early days of vaudeville and radio, through the heyday of movie westerns before World War II, to the current revival. He provides rich and careful analysis of the studio system that made men such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers famous, and he documents the role that country music and regional television stations played in carrying on the singing cowboy tradition after World War II. This book, lavishly illustrated with over 140 photos, is a wealth of information that comes out of decades of research. Green has unearthed never-before-published photos and rare movie posters-including one from an all-Black western, Harlem on the Prairie (1938). Through his close friendships with other singing cowboys and their families, Green is able to provide rare insights into the ways that some like Autry became stars and others like Raoul Walsh (who lost his eye in a shooting accident and later became a famous director) did not. Green also traces the history of cowboy music, from popular songs such as "Sweet Betsy from Pike" to the instantly recognizable harmonies of the Sons of the Pioneers. Green even speculates about just when the famous yodel became a ubiquitous part of the singing cowboy's repertoire. More important, Green reveals how the imagery of the singing cowboy has become such a potent force that even now country musicians don cowboy hats so as to symbolically take part in the legend. Nowhere has the recorded history of the singing cowboy and the film history been collected in one volume, and this book is sure to become the resource for students of the style. USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Hope Ford brings you a steamy cowboy romance about a frumpy administrative assistant with a secret crush that discovers sometimes even playboy cowboys can change their ways. Mia I’ve always been the ugly duckling. I never expected my Prince Charming to be wearing Wranglers and dusty cowboy boots. Crushing on one of my hot cowboy bosses isn’t smart. Especially the playboy, but try telling my heart that—it won’t listen. Not even overhearing him call me “frumpy” will discourage my affections. I mean, he’s not wrong. But then we dance, and the look in his eyes changes. Then a kiss, then a lot more, and I can’t help hoping he’s seeing me in a different light. Ryan I’ve always believed I’d never get tired of sowing my wild oats. I never expected quiet, unassuming Mia, our ranch office assistant, to be the one to change my mind. My oldest brother forces me to attend the cattlemen's ball with her. I don’t like that other men are noticing her new hair and new clothes. I definitely don’t like it when she goes on dates with those men. But I’m the one she comes home to. It’s my ranch she lives on. One kiss turns into a heated night in my bed, and I know she has to be mine. Now I just have to convince her we belong together. Redeemed Cowboy is the second book in the Whiskey Valley: Bryant Brothers series. If you love reading age gap, alpha cowboy, innocent plus-size woman, small town romances, then you’ll love Ryan and Mia’s story. Each book in the series is a standalone.

Burns and Hadfield are back ! When the horse of rancher Lyon Hamilton arrives at a neighboring ranch riderless, everyone fears the worst. Hamilton practically lives in the saddle, often surveying his family's huge tracts of land in the San Rafael Valley near Patagonia, Arizona astride his stallion. To unseat such a seasoned rider, something needed to go terribly wrong. When local law enforcement fail to find Hamilton or a believable reason for his disappearance, Hamilton's sister hires Jolene Hadfield, a retired police chief, to look into the mystery. Jolene and romantic partner, Andy Burns are soon on their way to the remote Hamilton family ranch, a spread that sits close to the Arizona-Mexico border. Unknown to Hadfield and Burns, FBI Agent Ron Kroll has also arrived in Arizona. Kroll is going deep undercover to infiltrate a criminal group suspected of smuggling narcotics and human trafficking from Mexico along the same remote section of borderland as the Hamilton's ranch. The smuggling group is headed by a disgraced ex-agent, so Kroll and the Bureau's interest in this case is more than professional—it's about settling the score with one of their own that has gone bad. Racial tensions, drugs, big money and dangerous rivalries converge in a covert war brewing in a remote section of American high desert, and it's about to boil over into something profoundly deadly. Hadfield and Burns quickly realize the rancher may have been the first of many casualties to come. Both gritty and realistic, this new novel from author/retired police officer Tom Ellis, is the action-packed followup to Biloxi Lights, featuring retired cops Andy Burns and Jolene Hadfield. About the Author: Tom Ellis is a retired police sergeant. As former contributing editor for Law Enforcement Technology Magazine he authored numerous articles on firearms, equipment, and training. He was a member of the Alabama Police High Power and Small Bore Rifle Teams, participating in the International Law Enforcement Games in Sydney Australia, Edmonton Alberta Canada, and Washington DC, USA.
