This volume presents research and expository papers presented at the third and fifth meetings of the Council for African American Researchers in the Mathematical Sciences (CAARMS). The CAARMS is a group dedicated to organizing an annual conference that showcases the current research primarily, but not exclusively, of African Americans in the mathematical sciences, including mathematics, operations research, statistics, and computer science. Held annually since 1995, significant numbers of researchers have presented their current work in hour-long technical presentations, and graduate students have presented their work in organized poster sessions. The events create an ideal forum for mentoring and networking where attendees can meet researchers and graduate students interested in the same fields. For volumes based on previous CAARMS proceedings, see African Americans in Mathematics II (Volume 252 in the AMS series, Contemporary Mathematics), and African Americans in Mathematics (Volume 34 in the AMS series, DIMACS).

This book contains the proceedings of the research conference, ``Imaging Microstructures: Mathematical and Computational Challenges'', held at the Institut Henri Poincare, on June 18-20, 2008. The problems that appear in imaging microstructures pose significant challenges to our community. The methods involved come from a wide range of areas of pure and applied mathematics. The main purpose of this volume is to review the state-of the-art developments from analytic, numerical, and physics perspectives.

In the Tradition of Ahlfors-Bers, V

In the Tradition of Ahlfors-Bers, V

The Ahlfors-Bers Colloquia commemorate the mathematical legacy of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers. The core of this legacy lies in the fields of geometric function theory, Teichmuller theory, hyperbolic geometry, and partial differential equations. However, the work of Ahlfors and Bers has impacted and created interactions with many other fields of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, topology, geometric group theory, mathematical physics, and number theory. Recent years have seen a flowering of this legacy with an increased interest in their work. This current volume contains articles on a wide variety of subjects that are central to this legacy. These include papers in Kleinian groups, classical Riemann surface theory, translation surfaces, algebraic geometry and dynamics. The majority of the papers present new research, but there are survey articles as well.

Symplectic Topology and Measure Preserving Dynamical Systems

Symplectic Topology and Measure Preserving Dynamical Systems
Author: Albert Fathi
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
Total Pages: 192
Release: 2010-04-09
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 0821848925

The papers in this volume were presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Symplectic Topology and Measure Preserving Dynamical Systems held in Snowbird, Utah in July 2007. The aim of the conference was to bring together specialists of symplectic topology and of measure preserving dynamics to try to connect these two subjects. One of the motivating conjectures at the interface of these two fields is the question of whether the group of area preserving homeomorphisms of the 2-disc is or is not simple. For diffeomorphisms it was known that the kernel of the Calabi invariant is a normal proper subgroup, so the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms is not simple. Most articles are related to understanding these and related questions in the framework of modern symplectic topology.

Author: Carlos Villegas-Blas
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
Total Pages: 161
Release: 2008-12-02
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 0821840649

This book consists of three expository articles written by outstanding researchers in Mathematical Physics: Rafael Benguria, Peter Hislop, and Elliott Lieb. The articles are based on their lectures at the Fourth Summer School in Analysis and Mathematical Physics, held at the Institute of Mathematics, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Cuernavaca in May 2005. The main goal of the articles is to link the basic knowledge of a graduate student in Mathematics with three current research topics in Mathematical Physics: Isoperimetric inequalities for eigenvalues of the Laplace Operator, Random Schrodinger Operators, and Stability of Matter, respectively. These well written articles will guide and introduce the reader to current research topics and will also provide information on recent progress in some areas of Mathematical Physics.
