Australia holds a unique place in the global scheme of fandom. Much of the media consumed by Australian audiences originates from either the United States or the United Kingdom, yet several Australian productions have also attracted international fans in their own right. This first-ever academic study of Australian fandom explores the national popular culture scene through themes of localization and globalization. The essays within reveal how Australian audiences often seek authentic imports and eagerly embrace different cultures, examining both Hollywood’s influence on Australian fandom and Australian fan reactions to non-Western content. By shining a spotlight on Australian fandom, this book not only provides an important case study for fan studies scholars, it also helps add nuance to a field whose current literature is predominantly U.S. and U.K. focused. Since the 2000s, the Japanese word shōjo has gained global currency, accompanying the transcultural spread of other popular Japanese media such as manga and anime. The term refers to both a character type specifically, as well as commercial genres marketed to female audiences more generally. Through its diverse chapters this edited collection introduces the two main currents of shōjo research: on the one hand, historical investigations of Japan’s modern girl culture and its representations, informed by Japanese-studies and gender-studies concerns; on the other hand, explorations of the transcultural performativity of shōjo as a crafted concept and affect-prone code, shaped by media studies, genre theory, and fan-culture research. While acknowledging that shōjo has mediated multiple discourses throughout the twentieth century—discourses on Japan and its modernity, consumption and consumerism, non-hegemonic gender, and also technology—this volume shifts the focus to shōjo mediations, stretching from media by and for actual girls, to shōjo as media. As a result, the Japan-derived concept, while still situated, begins to offer possibilities for broader conceptualizations of girlness within the contemporary global digital mediascape.

This graphic novel is an ode to the defining element of fandom. It celebrates both the culture’s theatricality and D.I.Y. beauty―as well as its often-awkward conflation of fantasy with reality―in seven interconnected short stories about two young women. Cosplayers is an affectionate, funny book about how fandom can be much more inclusive and humanistic than the stories and characters it's built upon.

Cosplay is a hobby that attracts attention. For better or for worse, when cosplayers descend on an event they are highly visible, and act both as a free form of advertising for the event, and as a display of performance art. Costumes may be outlandish or deceptively simple, instantly recognisable or incredibly obscure; but all represent an individual s passion for creativity and for the character they have chosen. The dedication and skill that goes into crafting these costumes can be appreciated by onlookers as well as other cosplayers, and cosplay is rapidly becoming recognised as an art form in its own right. This body of work examines cosplay and its transformation into a separate art form, and its representation within the New Zealand cosplay community. Sylvie Kirkman, hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, has been cosplaying and costuming for over a decade. She has won numerous awards for her costumes, including an international title with friend and fellow cosplayer Lucy Morris. After cutting her teeth on cosplay Sylvie went on to work in costume design and construction for theatrical and film projects.
