The Earth's Ionosphere: Plasma Physics and Electrodynamics emphasizes the study of plasma physics and electrodynamics of the ionosphere, including many aeronomical influences. The ionosphere is somewhat of a battleground between the earth's neutral atmosphere and the sun's fully ionized atmosphere, in which the earth is embedded. One of the challenges of ionosphere research is to know enough about these two vast fields of research to make sense out of ionospheric phenomena. This book provides insights into how these competing sources of mass, momentum, and energy compete for control of the ionosphere. Some of the topics discussed include the fundamentals of ionospheric plasma dynamics; equatorial plasma instabilities; high-latitude electrodynamics; and instabilities and structure in the high-latitude ionosphere. Throughout this text only the region above 90 km are discussed, ignoring the D region entirely. This publication is a good source of information for students and individuals conducting research on earth's ionosphere.
Advective Heating in the Thermosphere During Geomagnetic Storms

A scale analysis is performed to estimate the meridional wind speeds necessary to effectively redistribute thermal energy by advection to lower latitudes during geomagnetic storms. Winds on the order of several hundreds of meters per second are found to account for a considerable amount of heat transfer in the thermosphere. Meridional winds of this magnitude during geomagnetic storms been reported by several workers. (Author).

A comprehensive overview of the structure and variability of the upper atmosphere Earth's upper atmosphere is an open system that is strongly influenced by energy and momentum inputs from both above and below. New observation and modeing techniques have provided insights into dynamics, energetics, and chemical processes in the upper atmosphere. Upper Atmosphere Dynamics and Energetics presents an overview of key research advances in upper atmospheric physics, and measurement and modeling techniques, along with remaining challenges for understanding the state and variability of the upper atmospheric system. Volume highlights include: Insights into the interconnections between different areas of upper atmospheric science Appreciation of the dynamics and complexity of the global upper atmospheric system Techniques for observing and measuring the upper atmosphere Responses of the upper atmosphere to external drivers The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Wind Estimates Near 150 Km from the Variation in Inclination of Low-perigee Satellite Orbits

Precise orbit determination of five Air Force low-altitude satellites are used to estimate winds near 150 km variations in the satellite orbital inclinations. Zonal winds determined by this method range from 25 to 200 m/sec during quiet to moderately disturbed geomagnetic conditions, to winds on the order of 300 to 600 m/sec during active geomagnetic conditions. Comparisons are made with other wind data and appropriate theories. (Author).
