Pocket-gopher control has always been mainly a problem for the individual farmer. Great variation exists in the numbers of these animals today; some large farms, especially orchards, are relatively free of them, while other cultivated areas have as many gophers as under primitive wild conditions, or more. The introduced rats and mice are a perennial problem in stored products and about buildings where any kind of food is available; reduction of losses involves exclusion rather than destruction. While spasmodic cooperative campaigns of trapping or poisoning rats and mice kill limited numbers, there is no lasting effect unless these are followed up at frequent intervals.
