The Constitution of Albania was adopted by the Parliament of the country on November 28th, 1998. The document succeeded the 1976 Constitution, originally adopted at the formation of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania on the 28th of December that same year. The document was heavily amended in 1991. The Constitution defines the country as a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic. The document itself is divided into a number of parts which sanction a parliamentary democracy, people's sovereignty and fundamental rights of the citizens as a whole. The present-day Republic of Albania is located in Southeastern Europe. The country spans 28,748 square kilometers (approx. 11,100 square miles) and has a total population of 3 million as of 2016. The capital of the country is Tirana.
