Excerpt from Cement and Concrete One who wishes only a catechetical reply to any question that may arise concerning cement and its use will be somewhat disappointed in these pages; on the other hand, he who would devote special attention to the subject must, of course, go far beyond them. The author has attempted to take a middle course, avoiding on the one hand a dogmatic statement of facts, and on the other too detailed and extended series of tests, but giving, where practicable, sufficient tests to support the state ments made, and endeavoring to show the connection between theory and practice, the laboratory and the field. Excerpt from Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Construction For a time England led in the manufacture of Portland cement, but Germany took the lead in its production, and, until the past four or five years, has been the foremost country in the produc tion and use of Portland cement. During the past few years, however, the United States has surpassed all other countries as a manufacturer and user of Portland cement. Excerpt from Concrete There is some repetition 'in the book in the matter of the derivation Of formulas for beams and columns, because of the fact that two of the articles in Concrete Engineering are on the same subject as articles in Engineering News. The repetition could not conveniently be avoided in this com pjlation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete IN the following pages the author has endeavoured to place before engineers, architects and others a complete treatment of the subject of reinforced concrete in so far as is possible at the present day. It is hoped that the book, which is believed to be the first of the kind to appear in the English language, will be found useful by the many engineers and architects who already take an interest in this form of construction, and who wish to investigate it, and that it may also be the means of bringing to the notice of others a material whose usefulness and economy in suitable cases are beyond dispute. All the subject matter has been so arranged as to facilitate reference as much as possible. The several systems used up to the present have been placed in alphabetical order, so that any particular one may be readily found when desired. Excerpt from Concrete: Properties and Manufacture The book is intended to be useful to the student and graduate engineer as well as a reference book for the site engineer. To this end the theoretical and practical considerations have been combined in a degree found necessary in the Author's practical experience. The subject of concrete is vast and the literature on it is extensive, but a selective list of references for further study of individual aspects of the subject is provided. Information is included from many sources but the Author has endeavoured to give credit to these references. Many of the diagrams, graphs and illustrations are based on published information, the source of which has in each case been acknow ledged. The plates to Chapter 7 are from photographs kindly made available by the Cement and Concrete Association. Excerpt from Design of Concrete Mixtures During the past three years a large number of investigations have been under way at the Structural Materials Research Laboratory, Lewis Institute, Chicago, which throw considerable new light on the subject of proportioning concrete. These investigations are being carried out through the cooperation of the Institute and the Portland Cement Association.- These studies have covered an investigation of the inter-relation of the following factors: 1. The consistency (quantity of mixingwater). 2. The size and grading of aggregates. 3. The mix (proportion of cement). Any comprehensive study of proportioning concrete must take into account all of these factors. During this period about 50,000 tests have been carried out which have a bearing on this subject. These tests have been largely confined to compression tests of concrete and mortars. These investigations have given us a new insight into the factors which underlie the correct proportioning of concrete mixtures and show the limitations of older methods. Certain phases of these investigations are still under way. The following may be mentioned as among the most important principles which have been established with reference to the design of concrete mixtures. In a brief report of this kind it is impracticable to present more than an outline of the methods of applying the principles to practical problems. In only a few instances are experimental data given on which these conclusions are based. 1. With given concrete materials and conditions of test the quantity of mixing water used determines the strength of the concrete, so long as the mix is of a workable plasticity. 2. The sieve analysis furnishes the only correct basis for proportioning aggregates in concrete mixtures. 3. A simple method of measuring the effective size and grading of an aggregate has been developed. This gives rise to a function known as the "fineness modulus" of the aggregate. 4. The fineness modulus of the aggregate furnishes a rational method for combining materials of different size for concrete mixtures. 5. The sieve analysis curve of the aggregate may be widely different in form without exerting any influence on the concrete strength. 6. Aggregate of equivalent concrete-making qualities may be produced by an infinite number of different gradings of a given material. 7. Aggregates of equivalent concrete-making qualities may be produced materials of widely different size and grading. 8. In general, fine and coarse aggregates of widely different size or grading can be combined in such a manner as to produce similar results in concrete. 9. The aggregate grading which produces the strongest concrete is not that giving the maximum density (lowest voids). A grading coarser than that giving maximum density is necessary for highest concrete strength. 10. The richer the mix, the coarser the grading should be for an aggregate of given maximum size; hence, the greater the discrepancy between maximum density and best grading. Excerpt from Concrete Roads and Pavements The first edition of this book came out just a year ago and was so well received that the first printing was sold before all the books came from the bindery. A second printing, with a few slight changes and corrections, was then put on the press and has been sold out some time ago. Hence the writer has been led to believe that there is a large demand for information on the subject of concrete roads and pavements, and he has therefore derived considerable enjoyment from the preparation of the present complete revision of the book, in the hope that by this means he may be able to add a small part to the betterment of this rapidly developing branch of the concrete industry. The book has been expanded from thirteen chapters in the original volume to twenty chapters in this revision, and from 227 pages to 338 pages. Entire new subjects have been introduced in this volume, such as Chapter XIX on the promotion of concrete roadways. Then, too, some topics which were merely given a paragraph in the original edition are now expanded into chapters. In each case it may be said, also, that the work has been brought completely down to date and that such advances in practice as have been developed during the past year are included in this volume. The book is, in large part, frankly a compilation, and the effort has been to collect into convenient handbook size everything of value which is so far known on the subject.
