Evidence indicates that the concertos of Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn etc were performed as chamber music, not the full orchestral works commonly assumed. The concertos of Vivaldi, Bach, Handel and their contemporaries are some of the most popular, and the most frequently performed, pieces of classical music; and the assumption has always been they were full orchestral works. This book takes issue with this orthodox opinion to argue quite the reverse: that contemporaries regarded the concerto as chamber music. The author surveys the evidence, from surviving printed and manuscript performance material, from concerts throughout Europe between 1685 and 1750 (the heyday of the concerto), demonstrating that concertos were nearly always played one-to-a-part at that time. He makes a particularly close study of the scoring of the bass line, discussing the question of what instruments were most appropriate and what was used when. The late Dr RICHARD MAUNDER was Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge.

Lovers of the rich burnished tones of the cello will appreciate the keynote of this volume: complete scores of three great romantic cello concertos brought together in one convenient source. Spanning the last half of the nineteenth century, the compositions reveal extraordinary lyricism, imagination, and individual interpretation of the concerto form. The works in this volume are Robert Schumann: Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129; Camille Saint-Saens: Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 33; and Antonin Dvo ak: Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104. Generations of cellists and music lovers have savored these works for their unique qualities: the Schumann concerto for its ravishing interweaving of cello and orchestra; that of Saint-Saens for solid musical craftsmanship; the Dvo ak work for enchanting melodies and exceptionally rich invention. Now musicians can enjoy the felicities of each work, complete and unabridged, in this sturdy, attractive Dover volume. Reprinted directly from authoritative editions, this volume offers not only great music but also the quality features that musicians have come to expect from Dover: clear reproduction of musical notation; ample space for analysis, notes, fingerings, etc.; glossaries of musical terms; and more. Twelve-tone and serial music were dominant forms of composition following World War II and remained so at least through the mid-1970s. In 1961, Ann Phillips Basart published the pioneering bibliographic work in the field.

Robert Schumann was a unique personality in 19th century music: a celebrated music critic and champion of new composers as well as a talented performer and composer himself, he did much to modernize the literature and performance style for the piano. This book covers the key period of c. 1815-55, exploring how the generation that came after Beethoven was central in reshaping and refining the conception of the concerto style, and particularly the piano concerto. It relates Schumann's own compositional development to his musical environment, recreating the exciting milieu in which Schumann and his contemporaries lived and worked. Written in scholarly, but non-technical language, Robert Schumann and the Development of the Piano Concerto will appeal to college and conservatory teachers and students, as well as music connoisseurs. Also includes 60 musical examples.

A History of the Concerto may be read from cover to cover, but readers may also use the extensive index to focus on specific concertos and their composers. Numerous musical examples illuminate critical points. While some readers may want to study the more detailed analyses with scores in hand, this is not essential for an understanding of the text.

Lindeman, a musicologist, traces and defines the historical development of the concerto form as it passed from Mozart to succeeding generations. He then assesses Beethoven's contributions, and examines the classical model of the form in the early 19th century by overviewing several early romantic composers' works. Subsequent chapters analyze and assess the responses of five precursers of Schumann, whose work offers a synthesis of radical experiments and traditional tenets. He concludes by suggesting that concertos of Lizst offer a road into further developments of the genre in the second half of the century. Illustrated with bandw portraits of composers and excerpts from musical scores. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
