Mechanical properties of composite materials can be improved by tailoring their microstructures. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.

Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials lays stress on the advantages of combining theoretical advancements in applied mathematics and mechanics with the probabilistic approach to experimental data in meeting the practical needs of engineers. Features: Programs for the probabilistic homogenisation of composite structures with finite numbers of components allow composites to be treated as homogeneous materials with simpler behaviours. Treatment of defects in the interfaces within heterogeneous materials and those arising in composite objects as a whole by stochastic modelling. New models for the reliability of composite structures. Novel numerical algorithms for effective Monte-Carlo simulation. Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials will be of interest to academic and practising civil, mechanical, electronic and aerospatial engineers, to materials scientists and to applied mathematicians requiring accurate and usable models of the behaviour of composite materials.

Interfaces in Particle and Fibre-Reinforced Composites: From Macro- to Nanoscale addresses recent research findings on the particle-matrix interface at different length scales. The book's main focus is on the reinforcement of materials by particles that can result in a composite material of high stiffness and strength, but it also focuses on how the particle interacts with the (matrix) material, which may be a polymer, biological-based material, ceramic or conventional metal. The different types of particle reinforced composites are discussed, as is load transfer at the particle-matrix interface. Readers will learn how to select materials and about particle structure. Significant progress has been made in applying these approaches, thus making this book a timely piece on recent research findings on the particle-matrix interface at different length scales. - Features wide coverage, from polymer, to ceramics and metal-based particulate composites - Structured in a logical order to cover fundamental studies, computer simulations, experimental techniques and characterization

An overview of the micromechanics of materials methods and approaches that can be used for the modelling of wind turbine blade composites is given in this chapter. Using the various modelling methods reviewed here, the strength, stiffness and lifetime of composite materials can be predicted and the suitability of different groups of materials for applications in wind turbine blades can be analysed. The effects of interface and matrix properties, fibre clustering and nanoreinforcement on the strength and lifetime of composites are studied in a number of simulations, and some examples of the analysis of microstructural effects on the strength and fatigue life of composites are provided.

In this textbook for students of laminated composite materials, composite structures, and anisotropic elasticity, Chyanbin Hwu draws on more than three decades of research and applications experience to provide a leading resource on many unique topics related to laminated composite structures. This book introduces the mechanical behavior of laminated composite materials and provides related theories and solutions. All basic structural elements such as beams, plates, and shells are described in detail. Further contents include composite sandwich construction and composite wing structures. To connect with practical engineering applications and analyze more complicated real structures, numerical methods and their theoretical basis in anisotropic elasticity are also included. Advanced topics addressed include solutions for magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates; Green’s functions for thick laminated plates and beams; typical thick laminated beams; theory for general laminated composite shells; sandwich beams, plates, and cylindrical shells as well as delaminated composite sandwich beams; modeling and analysis of composite wing structures; complex variable theories of anisotropic elasticity and the related Green’s functions; and numerical methods such as finite element method, boundary element method and meshless method. Through this book, readers will learn not only the mechanics of laminated composite structures but also anisotropic elasticity and some popular numerical methods. This textbook is vital for advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in the mechanics of composite materials, composite structures, and anisotropic elasticity, such as aerospace, mechanical, civil, and naval engineering; applied mechanics; and engineering science. It is also useful for engineers working in these fields and applied mathematicians and material scientists.

In its most advanced form, Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) holistically integrates manufacturing simulation, advanced materials models and component performance analysis. This volume contains thirty-five papers presented at the 1st World Congress on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering. Modeling processing-microstructure relationships, modeling microstructure-property relationships, and the role of ICME in graduate and undergraduate education are discussed. Ideal as a primary text for engineering students, this book motivates a wider understanding of the advantages and limitations offered by the various computational (and coordinated experimental) tools of this field.

Micromechanics of Composites: Multipole Expansion Approach, Second Edition outlines substantial recent progress in the development of the multipole expansion method and focuses on its application to actual micromechanical problems. The book covers micromechanics topics such as conductivity and elasticity of particulate and fibrous composites, including those with imperfect and partially debonded interfaces, nanocomposites, cracked solids, and more. Complete analytical solutions and accurate numerical data are presented in a unified manner for the multiple inhomogeneity models of finite, semi-, and infinite heterogeneous solids. This new edition has been updated to include the theories and techniques of the multipole expansion method. Two entirely new chapters covering the conductivity and elasticity of composites with ellipsoidal inhomogeneities and anisotropic constituents have been added. A special emphasis is made on the heterogeneous solids with imperfect interfaces, including the nanoporous and nanocomposite materials. - Gives a systematic account on the multipole expansion method, including its theoretical foundations, analytical and numerical techniques, and a new, dipole moment-based approach to the homogenization problem - Contains detailed analytical and numerical analyses of a variety of micromechanical multiple inhomogeneity models, providing clear insight into the physical nature of the problems under study - Provides a reliable theoretical framework for developing the full-field based micromechanical theories of a composite's strength, brittle/fatigue damage development, and other properties
