Dr. Lester A. Gerhardt Professor and Chairman Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, New York 12180 This book is a collection of papers on the subject of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Most of the papers contained herein were presented as part of the program of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in June 1983 at Castel vecchio Pascoli, Italy on the same subject. Attendance at this two week Institute was by invitation only, drawing people internationally representing industry, government and the academic community worldwide. Many of the people in attendance, as well as those presenting papers, are recognized leaders in the field. In addition to the formal paper presentations, there were several informal work shops. These included a workshop on sensing, a workshop on educational methodology in the subject area, as examples. This book is an outgrowth and direct result of that Institute and includes the papers presented as well as a few others which were stimulated by that meeting. A special note is the paper entitled "State-of-the-Art and Predictions for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics" by Dr. R. Nagel which appears in the Introduction and Overview chapter of this book. This paper was originally developed as part of a study for the United States Army performed by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Science and published as part of a report entitled "Applications of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence to Reduce Risk and Improve Effectiveness" by National Academy Press in 1983.

There isn’t a facet of human life that has not been touched and influenced by robots and automation. What makes robots and machines versatile is their computational intelligence. While modern intelligent sensors and powerful hardware capabilities have given a huge fillip to the growth of intelligent machines, the progress in the development of algorithms for smart interaction, collaboration and pro-activeness will result in the next quantum jump. This book deals with the recent advancements in design methodologies, algorithms and implementation techniques to incorporate intelligence in robots and automation systems. Several articles deal with navigation, localization and mapping of mobile robots, a problem that engineers and researchers are grappling with all the time. Fuzzy logic, neural networks and neuro-fuzzy based techniques for real world applications have been detailed in a few articles. This edited volume is targeted to present the latest state-of-the-art computational intelligence techniques in Robotics and Automation. It is a compilation of the extended versions of the very best papers selected from the many that were presented at the 5th International Conference on Automation, Robotics and Applications (ICARA 2011) which was held in Wellington, New Zealand from 6-8 December, 2011. Scientists and engineers who work with robots and automation systems will find this book very useful and stimulating.

The goal ofthe symposium, "Computer Vision and Sensor-Based Robots," held at the General Motors Research Laboratories on September 2S and 26, 1978, was to stimulate a closer interaction between people working in diverse areas and to discuss fundamental issues related to vision and robotics. This book contains the papers and general discussions of that symposium, the 22nd in an annual series covering different technical disciplines that are timely and of interest to General Motors as well as the technical community at large. The subject of this symposium remains timely because the cost of computer vision hardware continues to drop and there is increasing use of robots in manufacturing applications. Current industrial applications of computer vision range from simple systems that measure or compare to sophisticated systems for part location determination and inspection. Almost all industrial robots today work with known parts in known posi tions, and we are just now beginning to see the emergence of programmable automa tion in which the robot can react to its environment when stimulated by visual and force-touch sensor inputs. As discussed in the symposium, future advances will depend largely on research now underway in several key areas. Development of vision systems that can meet industrial speed and resolution requirements with a sense of depth and color is a necessary step.
