Multimedia hardware still cannot accommodate the demand for large amounts of visual data. Without the generation of high-quality video bitstreams, limited hardware capabilities will continue to stifle the advancement of multimedia technologies. Thorough grounding in coding is needed so that applications such as MPEG-4 and JPEG 2000 may come to fruition. Image and Video Compression for Multimedia Engineering provides a solid, comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals and algorithms that lead to the creation of new methods for generating high quality video bit streams. The authors present a number of relevant advances along with international standards. New to the Second Edition · A chapter describing the recently developed video coding standard, MPEG-Part 10 Advances Video Coding also known as H.264 · Fundamental concepts and algorithms of JPEG2000 · Color systems of digital video · Up-to-date video coding standards and profiles Visual data, image, and video coding will continue to enable the creation of advanced hardware, suitable to the demands of new applications. Covering both image and video compression, this book yields a unique, self-contained reference for practitioners tobuild a basis for future study, research, and development.

This book presents an overview of the guidelines and strategies for transitioning an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment into a real-time constrained environment. Such guidelines and strategies are scattered in the literature of various disciplines including image processing, computer engineering, and software engineering, and thus have not previously appeared in one place. By bringing these strategies into one place, the book is intended to serve the greater community of researchers, practicing engineers, industrial professionals, who are interested in taking an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment to an actual real-time implementation on a resource constrained hardware platform. These strategies consist of algorithm simplifications, hardware architectures, and software methods. Throughout the book, carefully selected representative examples from the literature are presented to illustrate the discussed concepts. After reading the book, the readers are exposed to a wide variety of techniques and tools, which they can then employ to design a real-time image or video processing system.

Lossless Information Hiding in Images introduces many state-of-the-art lossless hiding schemes, most of which come from the authors' publications in the past five years. After reading this book, readers will be able to immediately grasp the status, the typical algorithms, and the trend of the field of lossless information hiding. Lossless information hiding is a technique that enables images to be authenticated and then restored to their original forms by removing the watermark and replacing overridden images. This book focuses on the lossless information hiding in our most popular media, images, classifying them in three categories, i.e., spatial domain based, transform domain based, and compressed domain based. Furthermore, the compressed domain based methods are classified into VQ based, BTC based, and JPEG/JPEG2000 based. - Focuses specifically on lossless information hiding for images - Covers the most common visual medium, images, and the most common compression schemes, JPEG and JPEG 2000 - Includes recent state-of-the-art techniques in the field of lossless image watermarking - Presents many lossless hiding schemes, most of which come from the authors' publications in the past five years

The main intention of this book is to give an impression of the state-of-the-art in system-level memory management (data transfer and storage) related issues for complex data-dominated real-time signal and data processing applications. The material is based on research at IMEC in this area in the period 1989- 1997. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the data dominated characteristics of this domain, we have adopted a target architecture style and a systematic methodology to make the exploration and optimization of such systems feasible. Our approach is also very heavily application driven which is illustrated by several realistic demonstrators, partly used as red-thread examples in the book. Moreover, the book addresses only the steps above the traditional high-level synthesis (scheduling and allocation) or compilation (traditional or ILP oriented) tasks. The latter are mainly focussed on scalar or scalar stream operations and data where the internal structure of the complex data types is not exploited, in contrast to the approaches discussed here. The proposed methodologies are largely independent of the level of programmability in the data-path and controller so they are valuable for the realisation of both hardware and software systems. Our target domain consists of signal and data processing systems which deal with large amounts of data.
