This book gathers all papers presented at the third edition of the international conference “Complex Systems Design & Management Asia” (CSD&M Asia 2018), which was held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on December 6-7, 2018. Mastering complex systems requires an integrated understanding of industrial practices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. This vision was the inspiration for creating an annual forum in the Asia-Pacific region dedicated to bringing together academic researchers & industrial actors working on architecture, modeling & engineering of complex technical & organizational systems. These proceedings cover the latest trends in the emerging field of complex systems, both from an academic and a professional perspective. Special emphasis is placed on “Smart Transportation.” The CSD&M Asia 2018 conference is organized under the guidance of CESAM Community which is managed by the non-profit organization CESAMES. The goal of CESAM Community is to structure the sharing of good practices in enterprise and systems architecture, and to certify the level of knowledge and proficiency in this field by means of CESAM certification.

Mastering complex systems requires an integrated understanding of industrial practices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. This explains the creation of an annual go-between European and Asian forum dedicated to academic researchers & industrial actors working on complex industrial systems architecting, modeling & engineering. These proceedings cover the most recent trends in the emerging field of complex systems, both from an academic and professional perspective. A special focus was put this year on “Digital Transformation in Complex Systems Engineering”. CESAM Community The CSD&M series of conferences are organized under the guidance of CESAM Community, managed by CESAMES. CESAM Community aims in organizing the sharing of good practices in systems architecting and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and certifying the level of knowledge and proficiency in this field through the CESAM certification. The CESAM systems architecting & model-based systems engineering (MBSE) certification is especially currently the most disseminated professional certification in the world in this domain through more than 1,000 real complex system development projects on which it was operationally deployed and around 10,000 engineers who were trained on the CESAM framework at international level.

The fundamental motivation of this book is to contribute to the future advancement of Asset Management in the context of industrial plants and infrastructures. The book aims to foster a future perspective that takes advantage of value-based and intelligent asset management in order to make a step forward with respect to the evolution observed nowadays. Indeed, the current understanding of asset management is primarily supported by well-known standards. Nonetheless, asset management is still a young discipline and the knowledge developed by industry and academia is not set in stone yet. Furthermore, current trends in new organizational concepts and technologies lead to an evolutionary path in the field. Therefore, this book aims to discuss this evolutionary path, starting first of all from the consolidated theory, then moving forward to discuss: • The strategic understanding of value-based asset management in a company; • An operational definition of value, as a concept on the background of value-based asset management; • The identification of intelligent asset management, with the aim to frame a set of “tools” recommended to support the asset-related decision-making process over the asset lifecycle; • The emergence of new technologies such as cyber physical systems and digital twins, and the implications of this on asset management.
