The unusual properties exhibited by left-handed metamaterials have been of great interest to researchers, especially in the field of RF and Microwave communication. The property of backward-wave propagation has led to a number of applications which were not possible with natural right-handed materials. One of the most exciting applications of these left-handed metamaterials is the Zeroth Order Resonator (ZOR) wherein resonance is achieved even at the zeroth mode, which is not possible with the traditional right-handed materials. This has led to the design of Composite Right/Left-Handed (CRLH) ZOR antennas whose resonance frequency does not depend on the physical length of the resonator. In this thesis the theory behind the ZOR antennas is studied and their applicability for use as RFID tag antennas is explored. Three novel CRLH ZOR antenna configurations are proposed targeting the UHF RFID tag application. The antennas are simulated using Agilent ADS Momentum and the simulation results are compared with those of the traditional 2-cell and 4-cell CRLH ZOR antennas that have been previously designed. The novel antennas are also compared with a simple rectangular patch antenna to demonstrate the reduction in size achieved through the use of left-handed metamaterials. The novel antennas are also simulated with varying values of the substrate height, metal thickness, and dielectric loss tangent and the effect of these parameters on antenna performance is analyzed. The three novel antennas and a rectangular patch antenna are fabricated and the experimental results are presented. The novel antennas are found to be around 30 times smaller than the rectangular patch antenna radiating at the same frequency.

The first topic in this chapter was an introduction to RFID systems. This was followed immediately with a discussion on metamaterials and LH-propagation. Expressions for the propagation constants, phase velocity and Bloch impedance were derived and discussed. Next, several metamaterial-based antenna designs for passive RFID tags were presented. The designs offered showed that by incorporating elements found in metamaterials in the design of the antenna on a RFID tag, the antenna could be made to resonate at a much smaller dimension. The result is a compact passive RFID tag with very useful max read range values.

This final report presents a summary of the work performed on the project "Novel Electrically Small Antennas and Metamaterial High Impedance Surfaces," under ONR Grant No. N00014-04-1-0619, over the period of June 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005. The main accomplishments are: 1. Investigation of fundamental characteristics of matched off-center fed Space-Filling Curve (SF-Curve) radiating elements such as Hilbert curve and Peano curve antennas for low-frequency applications, and fabrication and measurement of a prototype to verify the theory. 2. Analysis of mutual coupling effects between a pair of SF-curve antennas, and investigation of Yagi arrays made of Peano or Hilbert antenna elements. 3. Analysis of high-impedance surfaces (ground-planes), also known as artificial magnetic conductors (AMC), made of a periodic arrangement of inclusions made of Hilbert or Peano scattering elements, fabrication and measurement of a Hilbert AMC surface. 4. Application of SF-curve AMC surfaces in design of electrically thin microwave absorbers for RCS reduction, and analysis and RCS measurement of a rectangular conducting plate covered by such a surface to confirm the theory. 5. Application of an array made of SF-curve resonating elements in design of novel RFID tags, and their performance analysis in RF tagging of dielectric and conducting cylindrical objects.
