The death of Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau, on 2 April 1791, was a key moment in the early years of the French Revolution. The renowned orator, who had played a major role in drafting the Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen, succumbed to heart disease aged forty-two. His death prompted the establishment of the Panthéon, that secular temple intended to honour the great men of a new, free France. It was also the impetus for a whole range of artistic commemorative creations, including a number of plays, performed or published in the days following his death. This edition presents three such plays, all of which stage Mirabeau in conversation with other great men and women in the afterlife. It situates these texts in the memorial culture of the period, examining how they relate to other forms of commemoration, how they construct the figures of their protagonist and his companions, why their authors performed this commemorative act, and how the same genre could also subvert the celebratory tone. With an appendix containing a further two previously unpublished plays and a dossier on another lost text, this volume is an important study of the role and value of literary – and especially theatrical – commemoration in the early 1790s.

Women Writing Antiquity argues that the struggle to define the female intellectual in seventeenth-century France lay at the centre of a broader struggle over the definition of literature and literary knowledge during a time of significant cultural change. As the female intellectual became a figure of debate, France was also undergoing a shift away from the dominance of classical cultural models, the transition towards a standardized modern language, the development of a national literature and literary canon, and the emergence of the literary field. This book explores the intersection of these phenomena, analyzing how a range of women constructed the female intellectual through their reception of Greco-Roman culture. Women Writing Antiquity offers readings of known and less familiar works from a diverse corpus of translators, novelists, poets, linguists, playwrights, essayists, and fairy tale writers, including Marie de Gournay, Madeleine de Scud?ry, Madame de Villedieu, Antoinette Deshouli?res, Marie-Jeanne L'H?ritier, and Anne Dacier. Challenging traditionally formalist and source-text orientated approaches, the study reframes classical reception in terms of authorial self-fashioning and professional strategy, and explores the symbolic value of Latin literacy to an author's projected identity. These writers used reception of Greco-Roman culture to negotiate the value attributed to different genres, the nature of poetics, the legitimacy of varied modes of authorship, the qualities and properties of French, and even how and by whom these topics might be debated. Women Writing Antiquity combines a new take on the literary history of the period with a retelling of the history of the figure of the 'learned woman'.

The intertwined histories of Paris and of the River Seine are interesting but complicated. Celebrity Across the Channel, 1750-1850 is the first book to study and compare the concept of celebrity in France and Britain from 1750 to 1850 as the two countries transformed into the states we recognize today. Antoine-Chrysosthôme Quatremère de Quincy (1755-1849) was the most distinguished writer on art and architecture at the end of the enlightenment. However, as David Gilks shows in Quatremère de Quincy: Art and Politics during the French Revolution, he was never simply an esoteric antiquarian and theoretician; he was also a zealous functionary and skilled publicist whose writings on the arts often served political purposes. Quatremère de Quincy: Art and Politics during the French Revolution demonstrates how Quatremère's early writings on art and antiquity formed the foundation for a politics grounded in faith, authority, and hierarchy that favoured gradual social and political evolution over destruction and experimentation. Gilks then traces how Quatremère set aside his antiquarian research and became a royalist politician and publicist during the revolutionary decade. Quatremère feared that the Revolution would destroy the cosmopolitan republic of letters that had flourished when states across Europe supported the papacy's rediscovery of the past, restoration of taste and, revival of learning. Yet Gilks reveals that Quatremère was also a resourceful and an opportunistic political actor who deployed his opponents' language for strategic reasons. Gilks therefore reinterprets Quatremère's interventions by situating them in their polemical contexts and treating them as contributions to debates and quarrels, by locating his sources and reconstructing his social and political networks. The resulting study revises our understanding of Quatremère's famous reflections on the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, the Panthéon, art plunder, and museums, but it also discovers and sheds light on previously ignored writings. Although the study focuses on the period 1789-1799, it examines the second half of Quatremère's life to substantiate his commitment to crown and altar and show how he fought against the Revolution's legacy of godless materialism and calculation that was inimical to the arts. This is a thoroughly researched and richly detailed contextual study of the most eventful period in Quatremère's life, but it also offers an original and unfamiliar history of the French Revolution. Gilks integrates the study of political power with the history of ideas and art history, and provides a window into institutional and legal reforms and debates about cultural patronage and education.
