This work reveals the true dimension of the African Charter through a systematic analysis of its real or apparent innovations and a detailed assessment of the commitments of the States parties. It also analyzes the effectiveness of the mechanism put in place to monitor compliance with those commitments, examining the practice of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights from its establishment in 1987. It incorporates major recent achievements in the field of the protection of human rights in Africa, including the creation of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights and the establishment of the African Union.

The importance of the law of the sea has become self-evident in the light of current issues such as overexploitation of fisheries resources, oil sticks and unseaworthy ships. Since the establishment of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal States have enjoyed important rights over this maritime zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from the coastline. This book takes stock of how practice has developed with respect to the EEZ some 20 years after the signature of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, on the basis of State practice and also the practice of international organizations and NGOs.
