The issue of choosing a factorization scale in perturbative QCD is examined in detail. First a previously defined factorization scheme called the collinear scheme is implemented on Higgs production by bottom quark fusion, and then extended to Higgs production by gluon fusion. After this the issue of gauge invariance in this collinear scheme is addressed and it is realized that the collinear scheme fails to be gauge invariant. A more general analysis of collinear divergences and the phase space integrated over to calculate cross sections is performed and a new scheme called the generalized collinear scheme is presented for factorization of radiated gluons. Virtual corrections are considered and a possible method of dealing with them is suggested. This generalized collinear scheme is then tested on three 2 6́2 1 processes with encouraging results.

This book consists of reviews covering all aspects of quantum chromodynamics as we know it today. The articles have been written by recognized experts in this field, in honor of the 75th birthday of Professor Boris Ioffe. Combining features of a handbook and a textbook, this is the most comprehensive source of information on the present status of QCD. It is intended for students as well as physicists — both theorists and experimentalists. Each review is self-contained and pedagogically structured, providing the general formulation of the problem, telling where it stands with respect to other issues and why it is interesting and important, presenting the history of the subject, qualitative insights, and so on. The first part of the book is historical in nature. It includes, among other articles, Boris Ioffe's and Yuri Orlov's memoirs on high energy physics in the 1950's, a note by B V Geshkenbein on Ioffe's career in particle physics, and an essay on the discovery of asymptotic freedom written by David Gross.

Giving an accurate account of the concepts, theorems and their justification, this book is a systematic treatment of perturbative QCD. It relates the concepts to experimental data, giving strong motivations for the methods. Ideal for graduate students starting their work in high-energy physics, it will also interest experienced researchers.
