This report by the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council examines the issue of lung cancer in coke oven workers. A report on this subject was published in 1986 (Cm.37, ISBN 9780101003728), when the evidence base was limited to findings from a large US mortality study and two smaller UK studies. Since 1986 there have been a number of findings from additional studies which included long term follow-up. Collectively, these updated findings suggest a more than doubled risk of lung cancer among coke oven workers with greater exposures. A persuasive case now therefore exists for recommending prescription. The Council recommends that lung cancer associated with (i) at least five years in total of work at the top of a coke oven or (ii) at least 15 years in total of coke oven work, should be added to the list of prescribed diseases.
