Excerpt from Cobden's Work and Opinions The State is a severe mother. She demands from her noblest sons their intellects, their energies, and, if need be, their lives; but She is not ungrateful. The men who have guided her destinies live in grateful memory and in memory the more honoured if to great service and lofty aims they have added disregard of self, direct ness of purpose, and Simplicity of character. Such men become household words of the nation. They create the standard by which the nation measures itself, and by which it is measured. They strike the keynote Of national character. Such a man was Richard Cobden, a type of a great Englishman to Englishmen Of all times, a type in his truthfulness, in his Simplicity, and in his devotion to the welfare Of his countrymen. Excerpt from Cobden and Modern Political: Opinion Essays on Certain Political Topics But the advantages of anonymous political and literary criticism far outweigh the disadvantages. So much do they outweigh them that one regrets that, of late years, the world has been informed about many of the persons who write for, and nearly all those who manage, the London press. But if such writing ceases to be anonymous, it will either lose its liveliness, or engender strong personal animosities. Few Englishmen would, I imagine, care to see the system of the French press introduced among us, with its brag, its mendacity, its malignity. It is one thing to be attacked by a system, a company, a joint-stock proprietary, another to be always jostling against a man who gets his living by disparaging your reputation, and distorting your utterances. Excerpt from Fact Versus Fiction: The Cobden Club's Reply to Mr. Chamberlain IN his recent campaign against the fiscal and commercial policy which has guided British statesmen for the past sixty years', Mr. Chamberlain has seldom spoken with out references to the Cobden Club, and he has frequently attacked the principles and misquoted the opinions of Mr: Cobden. Mr. Chamberlain was for fourteen years, until 1892, an eminent member of 'the Cobden Club, the chief speaker on two occasions at its annual gatherings, and the proposer at one of them of a toast to its foreign members, all of them honorary members, including many of the most distinguished economists in Europe. He has lately asserted that the Club is supported by the money of these foreign members in the interest of their own countries, and against that of Great Britain. He has been informed that foreign members are only honorary members, that they do not pay subscriptions, or contribute to the funds of the Club, and that they have no voice in its councils. He has, how ever, declined to withdraw or substantiate his untruthful statement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Imperial Defence Cobden, in his first work, England, Ireland, and America, ' published in 1835, expressed the opinion that at some future election we may probably see the test of no foreign politics applied to those who offer to become the representatives of free constituencies. The great services which Cobden rendered to the state have given weight to all his utterances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Friend of Peace, in a Series of Numbers: Together With a Solemn Review of the Custom of War, as an Introduction to Said Work The impression, that aggressive war is murderous, is general among christians, if not universal. The justness of this impression seems to be admitted by almost every government in going to war. For this reason each of two governments endeavors to fix on the other the charge of aggression, and to assume to itself the ground of defending some right, or avenging some wrong. Thus each excuses itself, and charges the other with all the blood and misery, which result from the contest. Excerpt from The Curse of Cobdenism Although Free Trade came subsequently to my first appearance in the world, I confess that I did not begin to feel any doubt about its merits until near the end of the last century. The only apology I am able to make for having so long retained the opinions formed in youth, consists in the fact that my ideas of Cobdenism were not matured until I read Cobden's speeches, one of the most edifying of which is, in part, quoted in the followmg pages. Excerpt from Essays and Addresses This volume consists of a certain number of Essays and Addresses which have been delivered or written during the last eleven years. None of them have any relation to party politics except perhaps, to a very slight extent, the review of Mr. Morley's Cobden. But even in this case it seems to me that the changes that have come over current political theories since Mr. Cobden's death are so great that an estimate of certain particular aspects of his public career may be attempted without unduly raising controversies in which modern politicians are im mediately concerned. Excerpt from The National Review, Vol. 9: March to August, 1887 There is such a horrible hiatus between the premisses and the conclusion of this chapter in Lord Randolph's career, such an extravagant hardihood Of paradox in the selection of the coaling stations as a reducible item in our expenditure, that, in order to escape the most torturing suspicions, one is forced to look.
