Annotation The three volume set LNCS 3610, LNCS 3611, and LNCS 3612 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Natural Computation, ICNC 2005, held in Changsha, China, in August 2005 as a joint event in federation with the Second International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery FSKD 2005 (LNAI volumes 3613 and 3614). The program committee selected 313 carefully revised full papers and 189 short papers for presentation in three volumes from 1887 submissions. The first volume includes all the contributions related to learning algorithms and architectures in neural networks, neurodynamics, statistical neural network models and support vector machines, and other topics in neural network models; cognitive science, neuroscience informatics, bioinformatics, and bio-medical engineering, and neural network applications as communications and computer networks, expert system and informatics, and financial engineering. The second volume concentrates on neural network applications such as pattern recognition and diagnostics, robotics and intelligent control, signal processing and multi-media, and other neural network applications; evolutionary learning, artificial immune systems, evolutionary theory, membrane, molecular, DNA computing, and ant colony systems. Parallel hybrid-electric propulsion systems would be beneficial for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for military, homeland security, and disaster monitoring missions involving intelligence, surveillance, or reconnaissance (ISR). The benefits include increased time-on-station and range than electric-powered UAVs and stealth modes not available with gasoline-powered UAVs. A conceptual design of a small UAV with a parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system, an optimization routine for the energy use, the application of a neural network to approximate the optimization results, and simulation results are provided. The two-point conceptual design includes an internal combustion engine sized for cruise and an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack sized for endurance speed. The flexible optimization routine allows relative importance to be assigned between the use of gasoline, electricity, and recharging. The Cerebellar Model Arithmetic Computer (CMAC) neural network approximates the optimization results and is applied to the control of the parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system. The CMAC controller saves on the required memory compared to a large look-up table by two orders of magnitude. The energy use for the hybrid-electric UAV with the CMAC controller during a one-hour and a three-hour ISR mission is 58% and 27% less, respectively, than for a gasoline-powered UAV.

This is the first in-depth study of the English neurologist and polymath Sir Henry Head (1861-1940). Head bridged the gap between science and the arts. He was a published poet who had close links with such figures as Thomas Hardy and Siegfried Sassoon. His research into the nervous system and the relationship between language and the brain broke new ground. L. S. Jacyna argues that these advances must be contextualized within wider Modernist debates about perception and language. In his time, Head was best known for his research into the human nervous system. He did a series of experiments in collaboration with W. H. R. Rivers in which cutaneous nerves were surgically severed in Head's arm and the stages by which sensation returned were chartered over several years. Head's friend, the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, drew out the epistemological implications of how, in this new conception, the nervous system furthered the knowledge of the world.
