No one thinks straight. At least no one remembers straight. But ten years ago, things were different, weren’t they? Roland Barthes once wrote that color in a photograph is like make-up on a corpse. No one is fooled. In anarchic denial of convenient truths, a young international couple meet and marry on a small Mediterranean island. Ten years later, the couple separate in part due to complications with immigration laws. The woman recognizes pieces of herself as past objects indexed within photographic stills, but paradoxically, she is present, outside in this chaos trying not to fall apart. The images and their objects yawn to remind us of the reluctant destiny of all our beloved memories, bodies, and things: that is, to disintegrate. Borrowing its title from a passage in The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald, Closer to Dust is a séance, a gathering of invitees: inherently biased elegies, the images that conjured them, and the reader- viewer in attendance who is warmly invited to order these intimate fragments into cohesion.

Although historians frequently use memoirs as source material, too often they confine such usage to the anecdotal, and there is little methodological literature regarding the genre’s possibilities and limitations. This study articulates an approach to using memoirs as instruments of historical understanding. Jennifer Jensen Wallach applies these principles to a body of memoirs about life in the American South during Jim Crow segregation, including works by Zora Neale Hurston, Willie Morris, Lillian Smith, Henry Louis Gates Jr., William Alexander Percy, and Richard Wright. Wallach argues that the field of autobiography studies, which is currently dominated by literary critics, needs a new theoretical framework that allows historians, too, to benefit from the interpretation of life writing. Her most provocative claim is that, due to the aesthetic power of literary language, skilled creative writers are uniquely positioned to capture the complexities of another time and another place. Through techniques such as metaphor and irony, memoirists collectively give their readers an empathetic understanding of life during the era of segregation. Although these reminiscences bear certain similarities, it becomes clear that the South as it was remembered by each is hardly the same place.

This daily devotional book has been a God-led inspiration from its very start-up; from its original Bible verse and note of encouragement to some coworkers and family members to people around the world via my email network. Our God is so awesome! I've had people return emails to me or speak to me and ask, "How did you know that I needed that today?" or "How did you know I was going through this?" That is when I thankfully remind them that God inspired each and every one of these devotionals. I am just being faithful and following His directions. Now I'm led to put them into a year of daily devotions book to reach others. Occasionally, my emailed devotionals have colored photographs that I take as God inspired message for the day. Unfortunately, I couldn't include those in this book. I did include a photo in grayscale at the beginning of each month; the cover photo is a God-blessed look at an Alaskan sunset. I am so thankful that God is working in my life. I want to encourage each of you to grasp hold of whatever gift He has blessed you with and step out in trust and faith to go forth and to share it with others. When you feel down, just start counting each of the blessings God has touched you with in your life; and you will feel His Presence and comfort to encourage you. We are never alone; He is just a prayer away; nothing is impossible for our God. He is not done with us yet. He is asking us to be obedient in our service to Him, and He will help us grow in our faith. Trust in Him, and you will be astounded at what He has in store for you.
