Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Excerpt from The Principles of Clinical Pathology: A Text-Book for Students and Physicians The original edition contains copious references to the German literature. Many of these have been omitted, more especially those referring to the older literature and to the well-known German text-books. In their place, I have added quite a number of English references, which may be of some assistance to those who do not read German and who desire to look up more elaborate discussions of many of the subjects. Unfortunately our own literature is often rather fragmentary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Methods of Morbid Histology and Clinical Pathology With small pieces of tissue removed during operations, etc., which are not easily recognised because of the absence of the usual landmarks, it is sometimes useful to make sections in two or more different directions, so as to ulti mately examine the tissue in the correct plane. Microscopical examinations may be made with fresh, untreated objects, or with Objects which have been passed through certain manipulations, viz., hardening and imbedding in media, which facilitate the preparation of thin sections. Excerpt from A Laboratory Syllabus of Clinical Pathology Every teacher of clinical pathology, no doubt, has observed, with alarm, the rapid growth in volume of the subject-matter which he is obliged to take up in his classes, while the number of hours that are placed at his disposal for this purpose is remaining practically the same. Not many years ago the course in clinical microscopy, as it was then and is still at times wrongly called, was largely a course in what the name then suggested, viz., a course in the microscopic examination of the blood and the various secretions and excretions of the body, coupled with a relatively meager review of some of the simpler methods of chemical analysis of the same material. Excerpt from The Clinical Pathology of the Blood The following translation was authorised by Professor v. Limbeck shortly before his premature death, and represents the latest German edition save for the fact that Dr. Freund's chapter, which deals chiefly with the physio logical aspects of blood 'coagulation, and certain other passages have been considerably condensed. Professor V. Limbeck had a world-wide reputation as an authority upon all points connected with the physiology, pathology, and chemistry of the blood, and his early death was a heavy blow to every one interested in these subjects. He was a man of singularly engaging nature and of enormous capacity for work, and notwithstanding the many calls upon his time, was ever ready to help any who, like ourselves, had the inestimable' privilege of working with him. In addition to this Professor v. Limbeck combined many qualities which are not always associated with great learning. He was generously appreciative of the work done by others whilst on those rare occasions on which he was shown to be at fault, he was the first to admit his error. A touch of quiet humour and gentle satire also character ised him, as may be seen in the few but telling words with which he dismisses the plausible theory of Bunge, and the preposterous one of Neusser. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Pathology The present edition of the d104 Book of Pathology follows the style of previous issues in presenting the matter in paragraphic reference form, although so much new matter'has been added and so extensive a revision of every section has been made necessary by the rapid increase in pathologic knowledge during late years, that a complete resetting of the whole book was decided upon. The additions however have been in the direction of new matter and detail, with a careful avoidance of specula tion and controversy, the attempt being to give the practitioner and student a conservative defensible opinion of the subject as it is understood today.
