A new edition of this best-selling textbook reintroduces the topic of library cataloging from a fresh, modern perspective. Not many books merit an eleventh edition, but this popular text does. Newly updated, Introduction to Cataloging and Classification provides an introduction to descriptive cataloging based on contemporary standards, explaining the basic tenets to readers without previous experience, as well as to those who merely want a better understanding of the process as it exists today. The text opens with the foundations of cataloging, then moves to specific details and subject matter such as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), the International Cataloging Principles (ICP), and RDA. Unlike other texts, the book doesn't presume a close familiarity with the MARC bibliographic or authorities formats; ALA's Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd Edition, revised (AACR2R); or the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). Subject access to library materials is covered in sufficient depth to make the reader comfortable with the principles and practices of subject cataloging and classification. In addition, the book introduces MARC, BIBFRAME, and other approaches used to communicate and display bibliographic data. Discussions of formatting, presentation, and administrative issues complete the book; questions useful for review and study appear at the end of each chapter.

"Tariff Classification Using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule" provides a background of the harmonized tariff schedule and its structure, the General Rules of Interpretation, including the additional rule applied by the United States with examples of each. A summary of the General Notes (includes trade agreements for the United States) is included plus more. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule is used by over 200 countries around the world, representing the majority of international trade. It is an international coding system for assigning a number to a good so that the first six (6) digits are the same no matter where it is imported around the world. Each country can further describe the good and add more digits and assign their own rate of duty. There are "General Rules of Interpretation" that have been created by the Customs Cooperation Council, informally known as World Customs Organizations. When classifying goods under the Harmonized System, on the language of the General Rules of Interpretation, section, chapter and subheading notes are to be consulted and applied. Incorrect classification can result in the wrong duty rate in the importing county and incorrect statistics reported in the exporting country – end result is severe penalties may be assessed against importers and exporters.

Like earlier editions, this thoroughly updated sixth edition of the classic textbook provides readers with a basic understanding of the Library of Congress Classification system and its applications. The Library of Congress Classification system is used in academic, legal, medical, and research libraries throughout North America as well as worldwide; accordingly, catalogers and librarians in these settings all need to be able to use it. The established gold standard text for Library of Congress Classification (LCC), the sixth edition of Guide to the Library of Congress Classification updates and complements the classic textbook's coverage of cataloging in academic and research libraries. Clear and easy to understand, the text describes the reasoning behind assigning subject headings and subheadings, including use of tables; explains the principles, structure, and format of LCC; details notation, tables, assigning class numbers, and individual classes; and covers classification of special types of library materials. The last chapter of this perennially useful resource addresses the potential role of classification in libraries of the future.
