Excerpt from Classical Studies I am not going to weary you with an attempt even to recapitulate all the grounds of apology (if I must use that word) for Classical learning. The field has been so thoroughly trodden down by the multitudes who have passed over it, that there is not a square inch of green turf left, and it offers but a dreary prospect. Scholars can well afford to rest their case on this single consideration, - that the words and the thoughts of the old Greeks and Romans have been so thor oughly incorporated, so deeply ingrained, into modern language and literature, whether French, Italian, Spanish, or English, that no thorough knowledge or appreciation of these derivatives is possible except by going to the sources whence they were drawn; that this infusion has taken place, even in a greater degree, into modern science, which is so built upon ancient learning, - its precise, far-extended, and ever-increasing nomenclature being almost exclusively Greek, that, without a tolerable knowledge of that language, it may fairly be said that the student of science, however earnest and capable, knows hardly a word of what he is talking about. Without such knowledge, the lawyer must seem, even to himself, in the names of the writs which he every day draws, and in the phraseology of the legal aphorisms which he is compelled constantly to cite, to be prating a jargon com pared with which even Choctaw would be Significant and harmonious. Without it, the physician cannot read intelligently a single page of a medical book. 'without it, the divine, except by dim approximation and with much blind trust in very fallible human guides, cannot inter pret the very title-deeds of man's salvation. Language itself, in its widest sense, not of this or that particular nation, but of the whole human race, - that marvellous work, as I believe, not of man, but of God himself, with all its intricacies of structure, complex harmonies. Excerpt from Classical Studies, Information or as Training About six months ago, the present Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen, Mr. Grant Duff, submitted to the University Court a scheme for reducing the value of Latin Composition in the competition for Bursaries. In a lecture recently given at Edinburgh upon Education, Professor Jowett condemned the existing methods of classical instruction, and asserted that Latin and Greek might be learned in two-thirds of the time now bestowed upon them. And the other day, Mr. Froude, addressing the students of St. Andrew's on the occasion of his installation as their Lord Rector, in place of Greek recommended French, or German, or Chemistry, or Norman-French, or Chinese, or Russian, according to the wants of the individual. Such explosions of discontent keep the question of classical education in a lively condition. In fact, complaints against the Classics have grown so common of late that people begin to be weary of the question before anything has been done to settle it. The cry that we have had enough of discussion about Classics, and the sneer that every scribbler must have his fling at Classics now-a-days, are taken up with such heartiness by those interested in keeping things just as they are, that it is difficult sometimes to get a hearing. To vindicate the right of speech on a question that deserves every ventilation, it may be sufficient to say that if there were more doing, there might be less talking. It is contrary to all experience to suppose that if there were a cessation of the talking, the authorities might in course of time begin to act. The importunate widow in the parable knew better than that. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Considerations in Favour of Classical Studies: A Lecture, Delivered in the Irving Institute As you are about to enter upon a more advanced course' of classical study than you have hitherto pursued, I deem it proper to present you with a brief view of the important nature of this department of learning. There exists, as you are aware, in the minds of some persons a degree of prejudice against these pursuits, arising from the belief that they are of little or no utility. You have now made sufficient progress in them to be able to appreciate the arguments by which they are recommended; and I em persuaded that an examination of their merits will prove equally interesting and useful, and will Ope rate as an incentive to future exertion. Excerpt from Classical Studies in Honour of Henry Drisler Although the general sense of these lines is clear, yet two words in vv. 16 - 17 have occasioned much discussion, and in fact appear to defy exact definition. Nor do I believe that their real meaning in this passage can ever be determined to the entire satisfaction of Horatian students. It is the prevalence of opinion, however, in what seems to me to be the wrong direction that prompts me to avail myself of this opportunity to discuss the question somewhat at length, and to present a few points in favour of my own view of the matter. Excerpt from A Companion to School Classics This little book is founded, in the main, on notes which I have from time to time dictated to my pupils. Its scope has thus been limited by practical considerations, which I have vaguely indicated by calling it, "A Companion to School Classics." By 'school classics' I mean classics with commentaries for use in schools, and by describing the book as a 'companion' to these, I mean that it attempts to give the information which a commentator is, from the nature of his task, compelled to assume even in a young student. There are subjects which are of constant and vital interest for very large groups of familiar authors. d104ual criticism is obviously one, the customs of the Theatre another. Similarly, the historians and orators can hardly be understood without a clear grasp of the Public Economy of Athens and Rome, and (not to mention Plato or Lucretius) Euripides, Aristophanes, Cicero, and Horace, teem with allusions to Philosophy. A commentary on a particular text cannot deal at large with these subjects, or any of them; neither does a dictionary, in which the articles are dislocated by their alphabetical order. In works of either kind, a vast mass of details is presented, but not the history or theory by which such details can be correlated, and through which they are most easily remembered. Excerpt from What the Classicists Think of the Classics Modern culture, religion (christianity), philosophy, art, poetry, political science, all are based on Greek thought and rooted in Greek literature. The study of these original sources must always be essential to a liberal education. From a less profound standpoint, the formation of a literary taste, and an appreciative knowledge of art, mythology and history are to be best acquired through classical studies. Excerpt from Classical Studies: Essays on Ancient Literature and Art Ancient Literature But the Greek and Roman classics stand at the beginning and at the source of European culture. Nothing can displace them. Homer is the fountain-head of all European poetry and art. There he stands, venerable with nearly thirty centuries, touching his heroic harp to strains of unsurpassed, nay, unapproachable excellence and grandeur. All the features of a great heroic age, -the chivalry of the classical world, - from which European civilization dates, and political and domestic order take their rise, - stand forth in living reality, in his immortal pictures. There he stands, radiant with the beams of the early Grecian morning, as jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain Who is to drive him from his station there! And how, then, is Homer to pass from the memory and the hearts of men? Impossible. It is not a question to be decided by a few petty and short-sighted utilitarian views. Homer's reign is firmly established over the literary world, and if any nation should ever become so barbarous as to banish him from their schools, the penalty and disgrace would be their own. The language of Homer, as a picturesque, melodious, and enchanting instrument of thought, has never been surpassed. Now these great ancients have been, time out of mind, the teachers of the civilized world. They form a common bond, which unites the cultivated minds Of all nations and ages together. He who cuts himself off from the classics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
