Xi'an, the former Chang'an - home to the terracotta army and capital to 13 dynasties of Chinese emperors - experienced World Heritage fame in 1987 when the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor was listed. In 2014, five more heritage sites in Xi'an were listed as part of the Silk Roads World Heritage nomination. The ancient capital represents glorious moments of Chinese history and local citizens are proud of Xi'an's archaeological and historical status. However, the modern cityscape is as much shaped by high rises as by historical buildings and heritage policies intersect with demands for urbanization, modernization, and economic growth. This book seeks to understand how modernity, history, and heritage are reconciled in this city where the past meets the future.

The book is the first to define the meaning and components of the grid and apply it in Chinese planning history. It provides a fresh methodology, pushing the boundary of planning by this new practical tool for planners and governors and new perspective for the architecture and city planning faculties. From graphs to rules, from facts to in-depth analysis, this book focuses on the tool of urban planning, the grid, with thoughtful organization of knowledge from Chinese history, architecture and city planning discipline, providing knowledge along with politics, military, customs, mysterious Fengshui theories and astrology beliefs. Moreover, the book proved the link between grids and social aims, discussing each kind of aim by thoughtful organization of data collected from 301 prefecture cities, unfolding the powers propelling the city formation and shedding light on what shaped our cities today.

Law, State, and Society in Early Imperial China has been accorded Honorable Mention status in the 2017 Patrick D. Hanan Prize (China and Inner Asia Council (CIAC) of the Association for Asian Studies) for Translation competition. In Law, State, and Society in Early Imperial China, Anthony J. Barbieri-Low and Robin D.S. Yates offer the first detailed study and translation into English of two recently excavated, early Chinese legal texts. The Statutes and Ordinances of the Second Year consists of a selection from the long-lost laws of the early Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). It includes items from twenty-seven statute collections and one ordinance. The Book of Submitted Doubtful Cases contains twenty-two legal case records, some of which have undergone literary embellishment. Taken together, the two texts contain a wealth of information about slavery, social class, ranking, the status of women and children, property, inheritance, currency, finance, labor mobilization, resource extraction, agriculture, market regulation, and administrative geography.
