Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series, No. 50 (Special Issue on Taiwan Fiction and ‘Realism’) During the early stages of its development, Taiwan’s New Literature was intimately connected with realism. The year 2022 is the one-hundredth anniversary of fiction writing in Taiwan, and also the one-hundredth anniversary of modernist literature in the English-speaking world. For the former, this is the one-hundredth anniversary of the publication of Chui Feng’s “Where Will She Go?” For the latter, it is the one-hundredth anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s (1882–1941) novel Ulysses, and Anglo-American writer T. S. Eliot’s (1888–1965) poem The Waste Land. When the Alphabet Lab was first established, it also paid tribute to the contribution of modernism in the development of post-war Taiwan literature. In this special fiftieth issue on “Taiwan Fiction and ‘Realism,’” we once again identify and trace out the pathways and objectives of Taiwan’s writer apostles over the past one-hundred years.

COPING IN CRISIS attempts to examine 'crisis resolution' processes in the light of the time honoured Chinese perspective that crisis 危機 is a time of danger and a time of opportunity. It presents a specific approach to crisis intervention - designed to turn the dangers, demands and deprivations inherent in crisis situations along positive lines - and provides an impetus for" growth. The Hong Kong crisis study, reported in this book, examines the nature of personal, and family, crises; over which people in Hong Kong seek help from the family service centres of the Social Welfare Department and Caritas. It also seeks to discover whether opportunities for growth and learning are present, despite the risks to which the person-in-crisis is exposed.

The contributors to this volume were born in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong; they have been immigrants, foreign students, settlers, permanent residents, citizens, and-above all-"travelers." They are both geographic inhabitants of various overseas diaspora Chinese communities as well as figurative inhabitants of imagined heterogeneous and hybrid communities. Their migratory histories are here presented as an interdisciplinary collection of texts in distinctive voices: law professor, journalist, historian, poet, choreographer, film scholar, tai-chi expert, translator, writer, literary scholar.
