As a child, every year in New York at Christmastime, we'd watch "Twas the Night Before Christmas" on the television. My mother had a gift; she had the ability to take a single word and write whole stories and poems. One day I realized I had the same gift as my mother. I took the thoughts from my mind, put them on paper, and lo and behold, I wrote a children's book--not a story that falls too far from the tree of the original--one that deviates just enough to make you wonder what could happen if a mouse was found in the house at Christmas. Because I am from the city, I've lived among all kinds of pests, including mice. I imagined how whimsical it would be if a mouse showed up at Christmas. I also recalled one Christmas, as my mom and the 5 of us children were cleaning our 4 floor house in the city, the dogs got a hold of the turkey that was supposed to be our dinner that night. They pulled it to the floor and ate it all up. It was out of that memory that I chose to implement that storyline in the book and decided to add humor. After years of meditation, I finally wrote it out and thus, "Christmas in Da Hood" was born. This is a humorous children's story of how a family had to cope with a mouse and the excitement he brought to this household. I truly hope you enjoy this clever twist on the classic story.

Three Urban Books authors have teamed up to bring the drama in this latest installment of the popular Girls from da Hood Series. Get It, Get It! by Ms. Michel Moore: Monica was conceived on a pile of dirty clothes in the corner of a trap house. Cursed with a mother who worshiped the crack pipe more than her children, she quickly learned a Detroit reality: Get it how ya live or die trying. The young teenager is forced to beg, borrow, and steal to make sure she and her siblings survive to see another day. Cutthroat and conniving, Monica will make it, no matter who she has to step on or step over. You Can’t Break Usby Treasure Hernandez: Voodo and his girl, Moni, are inseparable. Like a modern Bonnie and Clyde from the hood, they let no one, even family, get in their way. When the people they do “around the way” business with turn out to be verified snakes, the ruthless couple gets revenge the only way they know how—street justice. With the law in hot pursuit, it’s Voodo and Moni against the world, just like they always knew it would be. So Far Gone by Katt: Sometimes love is the best feeling in the world, but the wrong kind of love can turn you into an entirely different person. When good-girl-turned-bad Renee gets together with Keithon, it’s them against the world, until the streets get to talking and their fairy-tale relationship turns into a full-blown nightmare. Karma steps in and has her way with the couple, and their lives will never be the same.

You can't sell it outside if you can't sell it inside. You want maximum business performance? Look under the hood and you’ll find your employee culture: it is the power that drives the enterprise engine. To harness that rumbling power you’ve got to solve the mystery of what an employee culture actually is, how it operates and how to move it forward. These are the keys that this book will put right in your hands. Renowned business culture expert Stan Slap knows the difference between understanding your employees and understanding your employee culture. The distinction isn’t semantics; it’s the key to whether your strategies will succeed or fail. This myth-busting book reveals why an employee culture is an independent organism with its own rules, beliefs, and motivations—and the power to make or break any management plan (and any manager right along with it). Slap shows you how to get whatever you want from your employee culture, whether it’s improved accountability, innovation, flexibility, resilience, energy, loyalty, or trust. Along the way he solves mysteries that have puzzled managers since the first Mesopotamian farmer hired some help, including: Why does an employee culture really resist change? What does it care about more than money? Why does it respond to leadership differently than to management? How does it talk to itself, and what does it mean when it won’t talk to you? Why are company values the most dangerous threat to gaining its trust? If you have a wonderful employee culture, this book will help you scale it. If you have a troubled employee culture, this book will help you fix it. If you have an employee culture under pressure, this book will help you ease it. If you have a new employee culture, this book will help you shape it. And if you are investing in a company, this book will help you protect your greatest purchasable asset. Under the Hood is informed by immaculate research, including surveys of more than 15,000 employees from companies the world over. It’s packed with original tactics that have driven performance for many organizations and countless managers. And it includes jaw-dropping inside stories of employee cultures from the likes of Samsung, Oracle, Progressive, CNN during wartime, Paul McCartney’s band, and the Super Bowl film crew. It’s all delivered in classic Stan Slap style: profound and provocative, heartfelt and often hysterical. This is not simply a management book; it is the business case for humanity. Management advice doesn’t get realer or more important than this.
