The Maya created one of the world's most brilliant civilizations, famous for its art, astronomy, and deep fascination with the mystery of time. Despite collapse in the ninth century, Spanish invasion in the sixteenth, and civil war in the twentieth, eight million people in Guatemala, Belize, and southern Mexico speak Mayan languages and maintain their resilient culture to this day. Traveling through Central America's jungles and mountains, Ronald Wright explores the ancient roots of the Maya, their recent troubles, and prospects for survival. Embracing history, anthropology, politics, and literature, Time Among the Maya is a riveting journey through past magnificence and the study of an enduring civilization with much to teach the present. "Wright's unpretentious narrative blends anthropology, archaeology, history, and politics with his own entertaining excursions and encounters." -- The New Yorker; "Time Among the Maya shows Wright to be far more than a mere storyteller or descriptive writer. He is an historical philosopher with a profound understanding of other cultures." -- Jan Morris, The Independent (London).

12 Christmas Duets for Bass Clef Instruments by Kenneth Baird: Duets on Traditional Christmas Carols for Intermediate and Advanced Players is a delightful collection of intermediate to advanced level duets based on traditional Christmas carols. They are challenging at times (not for beginners) without being overwhelming; at times joyful, at times uplifting, at times serene. In addition to being a great resource for teachers to play at lessons with their students, these duets are suitable for informal Christmas performances and many are appropriate for church services. Note: No effort has been made by the arranger to make these duets for bass clef compatible with most of the duet collections he has arranged for other instruments. These duets are arranged specifically for bass clef brass and woodwind instruments. The exception is that these bass clef duets are compatible with the trumpet duets with the same title. Included are: Away in a Manger; Deck the Halls; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; Joy to the World; O Come All Ye Faithful; O Come, O Come Emmanuel; O Holy Night; O Little Town of Bethlehem; Silent Night; The Wassail Song; We Wish You a Merry Christmas and What Child is This? Be certain to also check "Five More Christmas Duets" and "Carol of the Bells" duet by the same composer/arranger. Level: Advanced Intermediate - Advanced.

Sigfrid Karg-Elert is no strange name to flautists. The Op. 107 was The 30 Caprices for Flute were written specifically for a friend of Karg-Elert's, a flautist bound for service in the war. These short exercises were designed to challenge linear one-staff thinking and in short, keep the friend from becoming bored. They are now a standard set of technical, dynamic, and phrasing exercises for young flute students all over the world. Re-issued from the original authoratitive plates of Steingräber Verlag, 1910, originally printed in Leipzig. Reprinted here by Edition Fleury 2013. As with all Edition Fleury publications, blank staff paper and section for teacher notes are present in the back of the book.

"Choral Repertoire is the definitive and comprehensive one-volume presentation of the most significant composers and compositions of choral music from the Western Hemisphere throughout recorded history. The book is designed for multiple uses-as a programming guide for practicing conductors, instructional resource for students and teachers of choral music, historic and stylistic reference for choral singers, and source of information about composers and compositions for choral enthusiasts-and as such, the book intends to further and make accessible important information relevant to the vast scope of choral music. Organized by era (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Modern), Choral Repertoire covers general characteristics of each historical era, trends and styles unique to various countries, biographical sketches of more than six hundred composers, and performance annotations of more than five thousand individual works. This book is intended to provide the inquisitive listener with a guide to exploring the many layers of meaning found in Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The first section offers a general sketch of the specific context in which this composition was created at the end of 1734, shedding light on the work's liturgical function and taking a closer look at the biblical and broader religious themes. This first section will also focus on the contemporary textual and musical components of the oratorio genre, of which Bach's composition is a prime example. The second section is a detailed discussion of the 64 movements making up the work, with a focus on three aspects: the text, the music and the relation between the two. The nature of the musical setting and its structure depends on the nature of the text, be it prose (the Bible story) or poetry (the chorales and the inserted commentary), narrative or dramatic (indirect or direct speech). Moreover, the music was governed by the particular musical canons of the day, which largely determined and regulated the structure of each section and the coherence between successive sections or those at a greater remove from one another. In order to get to the essence of Bach's oeuvre, the reader-listener must be prepared to become immersed in the literary and musical idiom, the specific terminology and "grammar" of the day.
