At the onset of the American Civil War, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation found itself suffering from a division that had existed for fifty years prior to the United States being pulled apart. Creek leaders sought the best course for their tribe that would ensure their future survival. One such leader that worked to guide the Muscogee (Creek) Nation through the travails that awaited in the Indian Territory was Chilly McIntosh: a chief, a minister, and a soldier.

Old Atlanta may conjure images of southern belles and Civil War ruination, but the full story stretches back millennia, even before the first known residents arrived five thousand years ago. From centuries of Native American settlements that ended with the removal of the Creeks to the rough-and-ready pioneer days, the area was rich in history long before it was called Atlanta. Author Mark Pifer unfolds a complex saga, including forgotten details from the struggles of African Americans and new immigrants, while noting modern locations bursting with tales that predate the City in the Forest's rise amid the treetops.

“Billie Jane McIntosh combines accuracy of history and immediacy of fiction to relate the life of her ancestor, a warrior, diplomat, and selfless leader of his Native nation. In that bitter time of dispossession known as Indian Removal when others lost hope, Chief McIntosh believed in a future where his people would both survive and thrive.” — Joseph Bruchac, author of Our Stories Remember “One of the most misunderstood and maligned figures of early United States history is Chief William McIntosh. Historian descendent Billie Jane McIntosh recounts Chief McIntosh’s story in balanced detail with solid research and vivid creativity.” — Gary L. McIntosh, PhD, professor of leadership, Biola University, La Mirada, CA “McIntosh brings to life historical facts, harnessing the clash of civilizations to move the personal story of William McIntosh forward with anticipation and drama and to show inner tensions within characters caught up in this historic time of transition.” — Margery Bouris, officer with the Friends of McIntosh Reserve, Inc. “Billie Jane McIntosh offers a unique historical perspective on an important family and a period of time. The appendices are a plus in understanding the family tree, treaties, and laws of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.” — Tamara M. Elder, author and Curator Research Division, Oklahoma History Center “Imagine Creek life during the tumultuous period of treaty making and removal, written as if you were a participant in the unfolding history. McIntosh quickly draws you in with a masterfully crafted story.” — James R. Floyd, Muscogee (Creek) Nation

Beginning Creek provides a basic introduction to the language and culture of the Mvskoke-speaking peoples, Muskogee (Creek) and Seminole Indians. Written by linguistic anthropologist Pamela Innes and native speakers Linda Alexander and Bertha Tilkens, the text is accessible to general readers and students and is accompanied by two compact discs. The volume begins with an introduction to Creek history and language, and then each chapter introduces readers to a new grammatical feature, vocabulary set, and series of conversational sentences. Translation exercises from English to Mvskoke and Mvskoke to English reinforce new words and concepts. The chapters conclude with brief essays by Linda Alexander and Bertha Tilkens on Creek culture and history and suggestions for further reading. The two audio CDs present examples of ceremonial speech, songs, and storytelling and include pronunciations of Mvskoke language keyed to exercises and vocabulary lists in the book. The combination of recorded and written material gives students a chance to learn and practice Mvskoke as an oral and written language. Although Mvskoke speakers include the Muskogee (Creek) and Seminole Nations of Oklahoma, the Poarche Band of Creek Indians in Alabama, and some Florida Seminoles, the number of native speakers of Mvskoke has declined. Because the authors believe that language and culture are inextricably linked, they have combined their years of experience speaking and teaching Mvskoke to design an introductory textbook to help Creek speakers preserve their traditional language and way of life.
