Clay behaviour is affected by coupled mechanical and chemical processes occurring in them at various scales. The peculiar chemical and electro-chemical properties of clays are the source of many undesired effects. These papers provide insight into the variables controlling clay behaviour.

The book addresses fundamental issues faced by experimentalists, modelers and engineers interested in different physical, mechanical and transport aspects of biological tissues and chemically active geological materials, mainly clays and shales. The focus is on the couplings between electro-chemical and mechanical aspects involved in swelling and chemical consolidation. Emphasis is laid on the influence of these phenomena on mechanical properties and on transport properties. Applications in geo-environmental and geotechnical technologies, including nuclear and hazardous waste isolation, oil recovery, engineering geology, are addressed directly or implied. Control of long term effects of surgery and mechanical performance of prostheses may benefit from the modeling of irreversibilities that are of utmost importance in geological materials. Conversely, understanding the self-regulation mechanisms of biological tissues may be helpful in the design of efficient engineering materials.

This proceedings volume for the 4th international conference CIGOS 2017 (Congrès International de Géotechnique - Ouvrages - Structures) presents novel technologies, solutions and research advances, making it an excellent guide in civil engineering for researchers, students, and professional engineers alike. Since 2010, CIGOS has become a vital forum for international scientific exchange on civil engineering. It aims to promote beneficial economic partnerships and technology exchanges between enterprises, worldwide institutions and universities. Following the success of the last three CIGOS conferences (2010, 2013 and 2015), the 4th conference was held at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam on 26 to 27 October 2017. The main scientific themes of CIGOS 2017 were focused on ‘New Challenges in Civil Engineering’.

Biomechanics applies the laws and techniques of mechanics in the study of biological systems and related phenomena. Biomechanics uses mathematical and computational tools such as model construction of musclo-skeletal system, body fluid circulation, to aid medical diagnosis, therapeutics and surgery planning, designing of prostheses and implants or in tissue engineering. Present book targets specific topics pertaining to the biomechanics of soft tissues. Subjects addressed includes solids and multi-species mixtures as open systems: a continuum mechanics perspective; electro-chemo-mechanical couplings: tissues with a fixed electric charge and growth of biological tissues.

Clays are used as barriers for the isolation of landfills and contaminated sites. They are envisioned as long-term storage media for hazardous materials and radioactive wastes, and as seals in the case of geological CO2 sequestration or energy storage. Clay properties greatly influence the integrity, efficiency, and safety of these applications. Natural and Engineered Clay Barriers provides a clear view of the fundamental properties of clay materials and how these properties affect their engineering applications. This volume focuses on how the mass transfer properties (hydraulic permeability, gas fluxes, molecular diffusion, semi-permeable membrane properties), geochemical reactivity (adsorption, dissolution) and mechanical properties of clay barriers at the macroscale are influenced by phenomena that occur at clay mineral - water interfaces. - Examines clay properties from the molecular to the macroscopic scale - Addresses experimental and modeling issues - Authored by experts in the properties of clay barriers

Introducing the Quality of Protection Modeling Language (QoP-ML), this book provides for the abstraction of security systems while maintaining emphasis on the details of quality protection . It delineates the steps used in cryptographic protocol and introduces a multilevel protocol analysis that expands current understanding. Every operation defined by QoP-ML is described within parameters of security metrics, therefore evaluating the impact of the operation on the entire system's security.

The use of clay barriers for waste-isolating purposes has gained increasing attention in the geotechnical engineering community. Practical interest is linked to fundamental research, which includes examination of the behaviour of compacted materials and expansive clays. The interaction between the barrier, waste and the surrounding ground may involve several thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical-coupled processes that have been analyzed by means of 'in situ' tests, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling. Large-scale field tests have been developed in recent years by European Agencies dealing with the management of radioactive waste. These experiments have provided an opportunity to calibrate and to validate research models and offer benefits in terms of experience of instrumentation and installation techniques. The book includes about sixty papers presented in a symposium held in Spain in 2003. The four main topics of the book are: field emplacement and instrumentation techniques; fundamental research, material behaviour (i.e. bentonite), and laboratory testing; barrier behaviour and THM modelling; and chemical effects, HC and THMC modelling.
