The search for life in the solar system and beyond has to date been governed by a model based on what we know about life on Earth (terran life). Most of NASA's mission planning is focused on locations where liquid water is possible and emphasizes searches for structures that resemble cells in terran organisms. It is possible, however, that life exists that is based on chemical reactions that do not involve carbon compounds, that occurs in solvents other than water, or that involves oxidation-reduction reactions without oxygen gas. To assist NASA incorporate this possibility in its efforts to search for life, the NRC was asked to carry out a study to evaluate whether nonstandard biochemistry might support life in solar system and conceivable extrasolar environments, and to define areas to guide research in this area. To date, the second edition of the Rodd's series consists of 71 volumes and over 30,000 pages. Rodd's Chemistry of Carbon Compounds is continuing with a short series of topical volumes on emerging subjects that are not covered in detail in the main volumes. The first two topical volumes will cover organic electrochemistry and asymmetric catalysis. The book does not dwell at length upon topics of great importance such as Sharpless epoxidation, or upon the control of stereochemistry through catalytic reduction of double bonds. Only time can tell if all will be adopted as widely and successfully as their predecessors, but it now seems clear that chemists have at their disposal an ever increasing and formidable array of methods to effect total topological control of even the most complex target molecule.
