Three dimensional turbulent jets in crossflow at low to medium jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios are computed with a finite volume numerical procedure which utilizes a second-moment closure model to approximate the Reynolds stresses. A multigrid method is used to accelerate the convergence rate of the procedure. Comparison of the computations to measured data show good qualitative agreement. All trends are correctly predicted, though there is some uncertainty on the height of penetration of the jet. The evolution of the vorticity field is used to explore the jet-crossflow interaction. The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. The characteristics of 3-dimensional wall jets are strongly influenced by secondary motion particularly in the region close to the nozzle. There is evidence suggesting that jets from narrow and tall nozzles will spread a wall jet more broadly over a wall than low and broad nozzles. Three-dimensional wall jets with pressure gradients, in the region close to the nozzle are subject to the same effects of secondary motions as are wall jets without pressure gradients, while in their later course they may acquire the characteristics of turbulent flow in ducts. Theoretical investigation of the action of Reynolds stresses serves to clarify the nature of secondary motions and to show the reason for contrasting characteristics of secondary flow in jets and in ducts as well as the fading out of secondary motion with increasing jet diffusion. An experimental investigation has been made of the characteristics of a number of subsonic nozzles and three-dimensional turbulent jets which they produce. Parameters investigated are primarily related to the efficiency with which the nozzles produce thrust and the transverse growth of the jets issuing from them. Data is presented which helps to elucidate the compromise which must be made between efficient thrust production and rapid jet spreading for application to the design of ejector primary nozzles. Most data is taken for jets exhausting into a quiescent atmosphere, but an extension of the data to a moving secondary stream is indicated and experimentally verified. (Author).
