This work focuses on the characterization of adult lifelong learners’ Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) by implicit and explicit tools of personalization. It aims aims toward creating a system for the development of a learning path for the characterisation of PLE for adult life learners. The synergy of formal and informal learning in the dynamic construction of a lifelong learner’s PLE is fully explored, with the recognition that the majority of learning, especially for life long learners, occurs outside traditional learning formats. Specifically, this volume discusses the design, implementation, and validation of the SSW4LL (Social Semantic Web for Lifelong Learners) format, and the the SSW4LL system, built on Moodle 2.0 integrated with an adaptive mechanism (conditional activities) and some tools of Social Semantic Web (Semantic MediaWiki, Diigo and Google+). With thoroughly grounded cases studies, this volume makes the case that these systems are suitable to provide a dynamically personalized learning environment to the lifelong learner. All of these environments are fully discussed and cases made for each as a tool for constructing adult learners' PLEs.

This book has been primarily written for people who are interested and involved in helping students maximise the learning and development they gain from their higher education experience. The authors contributing to this book hope that their attempt to examine and give practical meaning to the idea of lifewideness makes sense to you and helps you support and facilitate development of people in your professional context. We hope also that it might have meaning for you in your own life. The book is also written for people who are helping higher education institutions develop a better understanding of the ways in which students engage in and are shaped by their whole life experience while they are studying. And for those people who are trying to bring about change in institutional practice, particularly those who are finding it challenging, we hope the contributions in this book will reinforce your conviction that this is a worthwhile thing to do. In recent years, Universities in the UK have been encouraged to evaluate what they do through the lens of the students' experience. This has resulted in an increasing institutional interest and awareness in the way in which students integrate higher education with their life beyond the campus. Student Support Services in some universities have been inspired by the visionary report ‘Learning Reconsidered: A Campus-wide Focus on the Student Experience’ (NASPA and ACPA 2004). We hope that this book will encourage and be of value to those who make decisions or who create policies relating to the student experience.

Educators’ most important work is to help students develop the intellectual and social strength of character necessary to live well in the world. The way to do this, argue authors Bena Kallick and Allison Zmuda, is to increase the say students have in their own learning and prepare them to navigate complexities they face both inside and beyond school. This means rethinking traditional teacher and student roles and re-examining goal setting, lesson planning, assessment, and feedback practices. It means establishing classrooms that prioritize Voice—Involving students in “the what” and “the how” of learning and equipping them to be stewards of their own education. Co-creation—Guiding students to identify the challenges and concepts they want to explore and outline the actions they will take. Social construction—Having students work with others to theorize, pursue common goals, build products, and generate performances. Self-discovery—Teaching students to reflect on their own developing skills and knowledge so that they will acquire new understandings of themselves and how they learn. Based on their exciting work in the field, Kallick and Zmuda map out a transformative model of personalization that puts students at the center and asks them to employ the set of dispositions for engagement and learning known as the Habits of Mind. They share the perspectives of educators engaged in this work; highlight the habits that empower students to pursue aspirations, investigate problems, design solutions, chase curiosities, and create performances; and provide tools and recommendations for adjusting classroom practices to facilitate learning that is self-directed, dynamic, sometimes messy, and always meaningful.

This book is written for everyone who is interested in learners and the learning process. The purpose of this book is to articulate a 21st-Century philosophical learning construct called Learning-Centered Learning. This new construct builds on the ideas and works of others, while laying a foundation to improve lifelong learning environments for all. The philosophical construct of Learning-Centered Learning is built around five philosophical learning assumptions. These five learning assumptions view the learning process as multidimensional, accommodating individual learning-style characteristics, creating intrinsic motivation, and giving all learners expanded control and responsibility over their own learning. The late 1990's produced a concern for a shift toward more Learning-Centered Learning environments. This book will help clarify and amplify the current concern and focus on "learner-centered" and "learning-centered" learning. The book gives practitioners the needed "theory into practice" strategies needed to improve learning environments and also gives the academic audience the philosophical foundation to implement change. The book includes "assumptions into practice" strategies, personal insights and examples of real life experiences with personal anecdotes. The hope is that this book will promote a new vision and understanding about Learning-Centered Learning.

This paper describes the feedback from the configuration and deployment of a Personal Learning Environment & Network (PLE&N) tool to support peer-based social learning for university students and graduates. An extension of an earlier project in which a generic and PLE&N was deployed for all learners, the current PLE&N is a cloud-based learning system that has been customized for groups of learners and support them with active and continuous learning in a blended environment. Major stereotypes of learners were identified based on learners' background, the academic program they enrolled in, and interviews, which together help to identify the learning and career needs of the individuals. Based on the collected information, stereotypes of learners are identified based on common learning and career needs and personal aspirations. Appropriate sets of tools providing support for communications, collaborations, file storage, information alerts etc. are provided to the various types of learners. Trials have been conducted over 3 academic semesters and key factors for enticing participations, contributions and sustained usage of the PLE&N beyond the passing of a semester are also discussed.
