Children living in poverty are more likely to have mental health problems, and their conditions are more likely to be severe. Of the approximately 1.3 million children who were recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits in 2013, about 50% were disabled primarily due to a mental disorder. An increase in the number of children who are recipients of SSI benefits due to mental disorders has been observed through several decades of the program beginning in 1985 and continuing through 2010. Nevertheless, less than 1% of children in the United States are recipients of SSI disability benefits for a mental disorder. At the request of the Social Security Administration, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children compares national trends in the number of children with mental disorders with the trends in the number of children receiving benefits from the SSI program, and describes the possible factors that may contribute to any differences between the two groups. This report provides an overview of the current status of the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, and the levels of impairment in the U.S. population under age 18. The report focuses on 6 mental disorders, chosen due to their prevalence and the severity of disability attributed to those disorders within the SSI disability program: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and mood disorders. While this report is not a comprehensive discussion of these disorders, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children provides the best currently available information regarding demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and expectations for the disorder time course - both the natural course and under treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1 % of the human population and is characterized by a core symptomatology including deficits in social interaction and repetitive patterns of behaviour plus various co-morbidities. Although a lot of progress has been made to uncover underlying causes and mechanisms throughout the last decade, we are still at the very beginning to understand this enormously complex neurodevelopmental condition. This special volume is focused on translational anatomy and cell biology of ASD. International experts from the field including several members of the EU-AIMS initiative launched by the European Union to develop novel treatments for ASD have contributed chapters on several topics covering all crucial aspects of translational ASD research with a special emphasis on ASD model systems including stem cells and animals. Primary objective is to clarify how anatomical and cell biological phenotypes of ASD will help to translate basic mechanisms to clinical practice and to efficiently treat affected individuals in the near future.

This volume explores the use of mass spectrometry for biomedical applications. Chapters focus on specific therapeutic areas such as oncology, infectious disease and psychiatry. Additional chapters focus on methodology as well as new technologies and instrumentation. This volume provides readers with a comprehensive and informative manual that will allow them to appreciate mass spectrometry and proteomic research but also to initiate and improve their own work. Thus the book acts as a technical guide but also a conceptual guide to the newest information in this exciting field. Mass spectrometry is the central tool used in proteomic research today and is rapidly becoming indispensable to the biomedical scientist. With the completion of the human genome project and the genomic revolution, the proteomic revolution has followed closely behind. Understanding the human proteome has become critical to basic and clinical biomedical research and holds the promise of providing comprehensive understanding of human physiological processes. In addition, proteomics and mass spectrometry are bringing unprecedented biomarker discovery and are helping to personalize medicine.

This book is a comprehensive overview of the clinical and scientific aspects of Autism from the leading experts in the field. The clinical section covers everything from epidemiological features to epigenetic regulation to behavioral therapies and much in between. The basic science section presents the latest knowledge on the underlying causes of the disorder including the role of various neurotransmitters, neurexins and neuroligins, reelin, and other proteins. Chapters also explore the cognition and motor control in autism and the connection between oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction and autism. The thorough description of these underlying causes may help researchers and clinicians find more effective treatments and therapies for the 1 in 68 American children who have been diagnosed with Autism.

A Comprehensive, Systematic Evaluation of Treatment Effectiveness for Major Psychological Disorders With over 500 types of psychotherapy being practiced in the field today, navigating the maze of possible treatments can be daunting for clinicians and researchers, as well as for consumers who seek help in obtaining psychological services. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice offers a roadmap to identifying the most appropriate and efficacious interventions, and provides the most comprehensive review to date of treatments for psychological disorders most often encountered in clinical practice. Each chapter applies a rigorous assessment framework to evaluate psychotherapeutic interventions for a specific disorder. The authors include the reader in the evaluation scheme by describing both effective and potentially non-effective treatments. Assessments are based upon the extant research evidence regarding both clinical efficacy and support of underyling theory. Ultimately, the book seeks to inform treatment planning and enhance therapeutic outcomes. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice: Presents the available scientific research for evidence-based psychotherapies commonly practiced today Systematically evaluates theory and intervention efficacy based on the David and Montgomery nine-category evaluative framework Covers essential modes of treatment for major disorders, including bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, alcohol use disorder, major depressive disorder, phobias, and more Includes insightful discussion of clinical practice written by leading experts Clarifies “evidence-based practice” versus “evidence-based science” and offers historical context for the development of the treatments under discussion Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice is designed to inform treatment choices as well as strengthen critical evaluation. In doing so, it provides an invaluable resource for both researchers and clinicians.
