The purpose of the study was to explore the changes in parenting in Chinese new immigrant families in the new environment--Canada, and to make recommendations to improve social services for this population. The questions addressed in the study included: (1) How is the child/parent interaction in Chinese families affected by immigration? (2) What factors contribute to the changes in parenting for Chinese new immigrant families? And (3) What are their perceptions of social services in Winnipeg? Symbolic interactionism was used as a methodological framework because it focuses on the personal and social construction of meaning and the essential importance of interpretation in human experience. Based on the purpose of the research, a qualitative approach was adopted. The interviews showed that immigration brought about significant changes for Chinese new immigrant family life and in the parent/child relationship. Culture played an important role in child rearing practices and could be useful in explaining parental behaviors. For instance, the parents believed that punishment (including physical punishment) is the effective way to deal with a child who has misbehaved because punishment brought the feeling of shame to him. They felt that their ability to raise their children correctly has been threatened in the new environment. The families also thought that social service organizations should help new immigrants adapt to the new society by developing culturally appropriate social service systems. Some recommendations emerging from the study are that policy makers and practitioners increase their level of cultural skill and knowledge.

This book focuses on families and their changes in Taiwan and China. Traditional notions of what constitutes a family have been changing in China, Taiwan and other Asian countries. The chapters in this book provide interesting methodological and substantive contributions to the discourse on family and social change in Chinese societies. They also underscore the implications of the various social changes in Chinese families. Written by Chinese and Western scholars, they provide an unprecedented overview of what is known about the effects of social change on Chinese families. One might think that defining a “family” is an easy task because the family is so significant to society and is universal. The family is the first place we learn culture, norms, values, and gender roles. Families exist in all societies throughout the world; but their constitution differs. In the past several decades there have been many changes in the family in Taiwan and China. For instance, whereas in the West, we use a bilineal system of descent in which descent is traced through both the mother’s side and the father’s side of the family, in many parts of China, descent is patrilineal, although this is changing, and China and Taiwan are starting to assume a family constitution similar to that in the West. This and other issues are discussed in great detail in this book. Indeed it is the very nature of the differences that motivated the writing of this book on changing families in Taiwan and China. The chapters in Part I: The Family in Taiwan and China focus on the basic family issues in Taiwan and China that provide the groundwork for many of the chapters that follow. Chapter 1 is about the distribution of resources in the family in Taiwan. Chapter 2 focuses on filial piety and the autonomous development of adolescents in the Taiwanese family, and Chapter 3 explores the important issue of family poverty in Taiwan. Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. Public discourse on Asian parenting tends to fixate on ethnic culture as a static value set, disguising the fluidity and diversity of Chinese parenting. Such stereotypes also fail to account for the challenges of raising children in a rapidly modernizing world, full of globalizing values. In Raising Global Families, Pei-Chia Lan examines how ethnic Chinese parents in Taiwan and the United States negotiate cultural differences and class inequality to raise children in the contexts of globalization and immigration.
