In the mid 1980s, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) inaugurated a series of studies in mathematics education by comm- sioning one on the influence of technology and informatics on mathematics and its teaching. These studies are designed to thoroughly explore topics of c- temporary interest, by gathering together a group of experts who prepare a Study Volume that provides a considered assessment of the current state and a guide to further developments. Studies have embraced a range of issues, some central, such as the teaching of algebra, some closely related, such as the impact of history and psychology, and some looking at mathematics education from a particular perspective, such as cultural differences between East and West. These studies have been commissioned at the rate of about one per year. Once the ICMI Executive decides on the topic, one or two chairs are selected and then, in consultation with them, an International Program Committee (IPC) of about 12 experts is formed. The IPC then meets and prepares a Discussion Document that sets forth the issues and invites interested parties to submit papers. These papers are the basis for invitations to a Study Conference, at which the various dimensions of the topic are explored and a book, the Study Volume, is sketched out. The book is then put together in collaboration, mainly using electronic communication. The entire process typically takes about six years.

"The best source I have seen challenging mathematically talented students. The activities are thought provoking and enjoyable. I will recommend this book to parents as well as educators of mathematically talented students!" Sally Reis Past President of The National Association for Gifted Children Challenge, engage, and inspire your mathematically promising students! Combining theory and practice, Sheffield expertly guides the reader through the process of mathematical talent development from identifying students with mathematical potential, to finding and creating first-rate problems for exploration and strategies for assessment. The multi-level investigations in this book are designed to challenge students and inspire deeper and more original mathematical thinking in Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. Each investigation is developed in the following easy-to-follow format: Relate—sets the stage for the investigation by connecting it to prior learning and the NCTM Principles and Standards Investigate—poses the initial problem to start students thinking about the investigation Evaluate and Communicate—provides solutions, probing assessment questions, and suggestions for teacher responses Create—offers ideas for extending and deepening the investigation, allowing even the most accomplished students to add depth and complexity to their reasoning Discussion—gives teachers hints on what to look for in student solutions, as well as ideas for encouraging students to dig more deeply into the mathematical concepts that are presented Mathematically promising students have the potential to become the leaders and problem solvers of the future. Extending the Challenge in Mathematics provides the practical tips and tools educators need to help their students develop this potential to the fullest.

This book is a rare resource consisting of problems and solutions similar to those seen in mathematics contests from around the world. It is an excellent training resource for high school students who plan to participate in mathematics contests, and a wonderful collection of problems that can be used by teachers who wish to offer their advanced students some challenging nontraditional problems to work on to build their problem solving skills. It is also an excellent source of problems for the mathematical hobbyist who enjoys solving problems on various levels.Problems are organized by topic and level of difficulty and are cross-referenced by type, making finding many problems of a similar genre easy. An appendix with the mathematical formulas needed to solve the problems has been included for the reader's convenience. We expect that this book will expand the mathematical knowledge and help sharpen the skills of students in high schools, universities and beyond.

This book contains 500 problems that range over a wide spectrum of areas of high school mathematics and levels of difficulty. Some are simple mathematical puzzlers while others are serious problems at the Olympiad level. Students of all levels of interest and ability will be entertained and taught by the book. For many problems, more than one solution is supplied so that students can see how different approaches can be taken to a problem and compare the elegance and efficiency of different tools that might be applied. Teachers at both the college and secondary levels will find the book useful, both for encouraging their students and for their own pleasure. Some of the problems can be used to provide a little spice in the regular curriculum by demonstrating the power of very basic techniques. This collection provides a solid base for students who wish to enter competitions at the Olympiad level. They can begin with easy problems and progress to more demanding ones. A special mathematical tool chest summarizes the results and techniques needed by competition-level students.

Challenge And Thrill Of Pre-College Mathematics Is An Unusual Enrichment Text For Mathematics Of Classes 9, 10, 11 And 12 For Use By Students And Teachers Who Are Not Content With The Average Level That Routine Text Dare Not Transcend In View Of Their Mass Clientele. It Covers Geometry, Algebra And Trigonometry Plus A Little Of Combinatorics. Number Theory And Probability. It Is Written Specifically For The Top Half Whose Ambition Is To Excel And Rise To The Peak Without Finding The Journey A Forced Uphill Task. The Undercurrent Of The Book Is To Motivate The Student To Enjoy The Pleasures Of A Mathematical Pursuit And Of Problem Solving. More Than 300 Worked Out Problems (Several Of Them From National And International Olympiads) Share With The Student The Strategy, The Excitement, Motivation, Modeling, Manipulation, Abstraction, Notation And Ingenuity That Together Make Mathematics. This Would Be The Starting Point For The Student, Of A Life-Long Friendship With A Sound Mathematical Way Of Thinking. There Are Two Reasons Why The Book Should Be In The Hands Of Every School Or College Student, (Whether He Belongs To A Mathematics Stream Or Not) One, If He Likes Mathematics And, Two, If He Does Not Like Mathematics- The Former, So That The Cramped Robot-Type Treatment In The Classroom Does Not Make Him Into The Latter; And The Latter So That By The Time He Is Halfway Through The Book, He Will Invite Himself Into The Former.
